How did you spend the weekend? Kim Garbarino did swam lap after lap after lap to raise money for the North Shore YMCA.

Looking to raise $10,000, the 56-year-old probation officer at Lynn District Court started his 24-hours swim at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lynch/van Otterloo YMCA in Marblehead, Mass.

He spent much of the time in the water alone, but was joined by others in pool. Among them was his wife, Amy.

This was not Garbarino’s first big swim. In 2012, he crossed the English Channel, accomplishing something he first dreamed about as a child, swimming in YMCA pools on the North Shore.

Five Zimbabwean commandoes swam the shark-infested Atlantic Ocean off the Namibian coast for more than three hours to save their lives after a training exercise went horribly wrong.

According to the latest ZNA magazine, the five soldiers were part of a SADC Special Forces training exercise in October 2013 who had to resort to their bravery and endurance to survive after their boats capsized during a sea-borne exercise.

After the mishap, 21 members of the team had to swim for three-and-a-half hours to shore. A Malawian soldier died after being hit on the head by propellers while two South Africans were “reported missing in action.

The five Zimbabweans  – corporals Manunure Frequency, Mapfumo Samuel and Mutemera Shadreck of 1 Commando Regiment and lance corporals Jakarasi Obey and Mukandiona Justice of Parachute Regiment – have now been promoted by a rank each.

Army Commander, Lieutenant-General Phillip Valerio Sibanda, recommended their elevation to reward them for “enduring difficult conditions in the ocean to survive disaster.”

Italy’s number one swimmer Federica Pellegrini has signed an endorsement deal with Proctor & Gamble’s (P&G) anti-dandruff shampoo brand Head & Shoulders.

Pellegrini, 25, is the most successful female swimmer in Italian history and will be the face of Head & Shoulders in Italy. Argentinean soccer star Lionel Messi is also an ambassador of the brand.

“I am proud to be part of the family P&G for this launch so important in hair care Italy. Head & shoulders is a line of products on which I can rely on, especially given the amount of time I spend in the pool every week,” said Federica Pellegrini. “With beautiful hair, I have the security to achieve the goals I care about most.”
