Jose Masso, Chief of Human Services for the City of Boston, and outdoorswoman Mardi Fuller join us to talk about societal factors like segregation and discrimination, that have kept African Americans away from pools and beaches. The City of Boston has launched the ‘Swim Safe’ program to make swimming more accessible to neighborhood residents.

One person who didn’t make the cut was Bill May, a 45-year-old competitor who was one of 12 swimmers to have qualified for the Olympic team. May had hoped to make history by becoming the first man to compete in the sport at an Olympics since a 2022 rule change that allows up to two men per team.
