I’ve never been one of those people that wanted to be famous, and you don’t get into swimming to be famous. For me it was just a case of, ‘oh god, what do I do?’. It was more overwhelming and then I just had to try to get used to it. It was still a bit like, ‘why do people want to come up and talk to me?’ or have a photo, I just didn’t really ever expect it to happen. I certainly didn’t expect it to happen to myself, so it just took a bit of getting used to, but at the same time it’s not like I’m Madonna!

    In 2012, 4,876 people landed in the emergency room after being injured by pool chemicals, researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate.

    Michael Phelps is in Charlotte swimming in the Arena Grand Prix. The sport of swimming is increasing in popularity in Charlotte with Olympians paying regular visits for meets and some training here year round.

    But Ryan Lochte’s coach says there is a severe shortage of water space in the Charlotte region.

    Michael Phelps was back in familiar waters and on top of the winner’s podium in his comeback to competitive swimming at the U.S. Grand Prix in Charlotte on Friday.

    Competing for just the second time since retiring after the 2012 London Olympics, Phelps ticked off all the important boxes he needed to.

    In the morning heats, he tested his stamina by entering two lung-sapping events – the 200 metres freestyle and 100m butterfly – then in the evening finals, he tested his speed by winning the 100m butterfly final.

    Charles Crews, who was swimming at Wrightsville Beach, said he learned just how strong rip currents can be and what it feels like to be caught in one.

    “It was pushing me outward, away from the wall basically, and it was coming downward onto me and pushing me under. As I was swimming, I was trying to stay afloat. And, whenever I would try to get close to the wall, it would crash onto me and pull me down under,” Crews said.

    Olympic champion swimmer Katie Ledecky plans to swim for Stanford after she graduates from high school next year.

    The 17-year-old from Bethesda, Maryland, announced her commitment Thursday. She is a junior honors student at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in her hometown.

    Ledecky will join Olympic champion Missy Franklin in the San Francisco Bay Area. Franklin is wrapping up her freshman year at California. She plans to swim during her sophomore year before turning pro leading to the 2016 Rio Olympics.
