Sioux Falls City pools will be opening to the public this Memorial Day weekend. But not everyone will be ready.
According to a new study from the Red Cross, many adults don’t know basic swimming skills and that could be dangerous.Of the adults who know how to swim, only 56 percent can perform basic life-saving skills.
“Like for instance, if you go to a lake where it may not be supervised, and you get in a situation where you can’t help yourself that’s a dangerous situation to put yourself in and to put your family in,” Jean Pearson, Recreation Program Coordinator for Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation, said.

With warmer weather arriving, many people across the East will be heading to pools. But how do you know they’re safe to swim in.
Keith Jernigan is with the Craven County Health Department. He says this time of the year is extremely busy as seasonal pools ask to be inspected so they can open to the public.
“We meet them out on site to look at things such as the safety equipment, the pool water quality and making sure the equipment is operating properly,” said Jernigan.
But these types of on site inspections are few and far between.

Memo from FINA
Due to the fact that this device will be available in the end of May 2014 only and, in order to ensure that a maximum number of swimmers have access to it for testing and practising, under the supervision of the FINA TSC Delegate present at the event, the FINA TSC Commission recommends that:
The device be used at the FINA Swimming World Cup 2014 Series in both competition and warm-up pools.
After the conclusion of the last FINA SWC 2014 event, and following the reports of the FINA TSC Delegates present at each meet, the FINA TSC Commission will make a final recommendation on whether the device is to be used in Doha 2014 or later in Kazan 2015.
