A near tragedy in Coral Springs when a two-year-old child was found by his grandfather in a backyard pool.

The boy was rushed to the hospital. Doctors were able get a pulse and the child was breathing with assistance.

Friday night, officials said the boy was at Broward General Hospital in very serious condition.

The child’s grandfather was watching the boy and the child’s one-year-old cousin.

“He turned away, didn’t see the kids, looked back and found the one-year-old by the slider which was partially opened toward the back of the house,” explained Coral Springs Police Sgt. Carla Kmiotek.

That’s when he made the horrifying discovery that the two-year-old was in the water.

Fallen swimming champion Ian Thorpe has triumphantly emerged from the darkest months of his life.

Australia’s most successful Olympian is out of rehabilitation and will attend the Commonwealth Games in Scotland in July.

His manager is in negotiations with Channel Ten and European networks for commentating roles at the swimming. Ten is expected to announce his signing within the next fortnight to work alongside former teammate Nicole Livingstone on the network’s coverage of the games.

“That’s great news that Ian is better,” Livingstone told The Sunday Telegraph.

“That’s what we’ve all been hoping for.”

As the heat of summer approaches, you might be seeking a refreshing dip in a local pool, pond, lake, or river, but jumping in to New York’s East River is probably not at the top of your list. However, designers Jeffrey Franklin, Archie Coates, and architect Dong-Ping Wong are working on a project called +Pool, a giant plus-shaped pool that filters river water to create safe, clean water, that everyone can enjoy. They have raised over $300,000 on Kickstarter, but to get this giant plus-shaped floating pool in the contaminated waterway is no easy task.

A Toronto teacher says his Grade 8 students are unhappy that a three-day graduation trip to a nature camp in Bancroft, Ont., next month was cancelled due to the school board’s safety concerns over activities such as swimming and archery.

Lenny Chiro, who teaches at Amesbury Middle School, was preparing his class for the annual trip to Camp Walden when the school board cancelled it, citing safety concerns.

“It’s confusing why at the last moment we’re told that we’re not in compliance with safety rules, when the facility that we’re going to has an exemplary track record and is extremely well supervised,” Chiro said Friday in an interview with CBC Radio’s Metro Morning.

  • How African Americans beat one of the most racist institutions: The swimming pool

Most conversations about black people’s relatively poor swimming skills begin and end with the assumption that it’s all black people’s fault. For example, there are swimming pools and beaches all around this area, so if black people don’t swim as well – so the thinking goes – it must be because black people don’t want to know.

But what if there is a more sinister reason to black people’s unfamiliarity with the water? What if it’s as simple as the long history of black people being kept out of otherwise public pools and beaches?

In a blog post this week at grist.org, environment writer Brentin Mock describes the swimming pool as one of America’s most racist institutions.
