    The response of the Directors of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in Queensland and New South Wales to sexual abuse allegations against former Olympic swimming coach Scott Volkers will come under scrutiny next month at the royal commission into child abuse.

    Swimming Australia will also come under the spotlight when the commission examines how senior swimming officials dealt with allegations of child abuse against Volkers and another high-profile Olympic coach, Terry Buck.

    A day after Jose “Tony” Joya drowned near Whiting, Ind., after he and a group of friends jumped from a pier into Lake Michigan, the mother of his young son was left wondering why he went into the water when he couldn’t swim.

  • Amy Van Dyken out of ICU

    Olympic champion swimmer Amy Van Dyke-Rouen has been moved from intensive care to a regular hospital room, nine days after severing her spinal cord in an all-terrain vehicle accident.

    Hospital spokeswoman Jamie Grimm says the six-time gold medalist was in good condition and moved from the ICU on Sunday morning.

    Van Dyken-Rouen was injured June 6 when the ATV she was driving hit a curb and hurtled off a drop-off near Show Low. The accident left her paralyzed, though her family says it’s unclear if she will remain that way.

    William Meynard, French 2013 world champion in the 4×100 freestyle, was arrested by Brazilian police on Sunday in downtown Rio de Janeiro, for possession of cannabis and then trying to bribe the police.

    A policeman himself, Meynard offered cash to be released by the police, thinking it was custom in Brazil.

    In his testimony, the French admitted that he had used drugs with two strangers before being approached by the police. And admitted that he offered money to the police.

  • Lakeside Swim Club celebrates 90 years

    There are a lot of places to take a dip during the summer, but there aren’t many that look,or have a story like Lakeside Swim Club in the Highlands.

    “It was a working rock quarry,” Asst. Manager, Mary Graves said.

    That was in the early 1900s, till a spring started to fill the lake.

    “There were a few in the neighborhood that said ‘lets make this our pool,’ and it became our neighborhood pool,” she said.

  • American Red Cross Free Swim App Brings Water Safety Information to Mobile Devices

    The American Red Cross has released a free new Swim App to promote water safety for parents and caregivers of young people learning how to swim.

    The app allows iPhone, iPad, Android and Kindle Fire users to track their child’s progress in Red Cross swim lessons and play safety-themed games to test their knowledge together.

    “Learning how to swim and knowing who how to act in and around the water helps prevent accidents and saves lives, and this free Red Cross Swim App is relevant for all children – not just those enrolled in swim lessons,” said Peter G. Wernicki, MD, member of American Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council and chair of its Aquatic Sub-Council.
