• A group of Olympic swimmers have banded together to organize a swim clinic and auction to raise funds for a fellow swimmer battling cancer.

Jeff Julian, head coach at Rose Bowl Aquatics, was diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer in January.

Jason Lezak, a four-time Olympic gold medalist and close friend of Julian, gathered eight fellow Olympians and 200 children to participate in Sunday’s event held at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center in Pasadena. The entry fees and live auction proceeds will be donated to Julian and his family.

At $155 per ticket, the clinic raised more than $30,000 for Team Jeff, organizers said.

  • Splash Drone is designed to film all of your lakeside adventures. It will also come with a payload release function, so it can make small seaside deliveries to you or your friends. Although we hope you never need it, the Splash Drone also has a flare attachment to help you out in case of emergency.

The developers are making two versions of the Splash Drone. The first version is remote-controlled, and the second version has app bassed controls and features an autonomous mode. With the app based controls you can set a precise flight path ahead of time, or you can engage Splash Drone’s “follow me” mode so the drone will automatically follow your awesome wakeboarding session. The drone can be set to return to its launch site for an automatic landing, but if it ever lands in the water it’s no big deal because the drone and camera gimbal are waterproof.

Splash Drone is up on Kickstarter and although it only asked for $17,500 USD, it has already raised over $64,000 USD. The Kickstarter still has 30 days to go and still has some early bird specials available to pledges.

  • A teenager has drowned off the coast of Moreton Island while free diving.

The 19-year-old man was with a group of friends who tried desperately to rescue their unconscious mate.

The man’s body was ferried to shore on a water police vessel.

“It’s a tragic time for the boys involved and their families. They’ve lost a young man that was doing something he enjoyed doing,” Water Police officer Sean Harrison said.

The four men were anchored at Hutchinson Shoal north of Cape Moreton, a popular location for spear fishing and free diving.

It is understood the men were taking turns testing their ability deep diving unassisted on a single breath.

  • The effervescent Missy Franklin has laid out a bold (but certainly attainable) dream for her swimming career.

“Without a doubt, I feel totally free to say it’s my absolute dream to become the most decorated female Olympian, or female swimmer Olympian of all time, I should say,” Franklin said in a “60 Minutes Sports” profile that first aired Wednesday night.

Franklin, a 19-year-old sophomore at the University of California, won five medals (four gold) in her Olympic debut at London 2012.

She must take at least eight more Olympic medals to surpass the record of 12 captured by her U.S. swimming predecessors — Jenny Thompson, Dara Torres and Natalie Coughlin. Coughlin, who earned a medal in every one of her Olympic races, is still active at 32.

The most decorated female Olympian across all sports was Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, who bagged 18 medals. The most decorated Olympian is Michael Phelps, at 22 (and possibly counting).
