  • US swimmer Michael Phelps, known as “The Shark of Baltimore” will miss his participation at the Pan American Games in Toronto (July) and the World Championship (August), assured a spokesman from the US Swimming National Federation.

After a possible announcement for retirement from competition by the Shark of Baltimore in October 2014, such a statement is like turning a new page to a book.

However, the possibility for Phelps to take part in big competitions this year, with his hypotetical participation in both events, was opened in March.

Everything started when US Swimming Executive Director Chuck Wielgus said less than four weeks ago, that Phelps’ participation in both events was complicated, but “there are chances for it to let it happen.”

Now, US Swimming states that Phelps is not “a member of the US national team, by decision of both parts, the swimmer and the institution.”

Michael Phelps was sanctioned in September last year to 6 months without taking part in competitions, because of driving drunk and at excess of speed in Baltimore, Maryland (his native city).

The suspension over the winner of 18 Olympic titles in his career concludes on April 6.

  • On Sunday afternoon Portland Police responded to SE Water Ave., near the Tillikum Crossing bridge where a suspicious man was possibly stealing wire from an electrical box.

The man has been identified as 39-year-old Randall Hartwell.

Officers arrived in the area and tried to talk to Hartwell, but he gave a fake name to police that came back with a warrant. After Hartwell realized what had happened he fled from police.

Portland Police told Hartwell he was under arrest, but he ran away towards the Willamette River, jumping into the water. He tried to swim away, but he did not appear to be a good swimmer and came back to shore where he proceeded to hide along the riverbank in some bushes.

Additional officers, a Police K-9 Unit, and boats from Portland Fire & Rescue and the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist in locating Hartwell.

He was found and taken into custody without incident. Medical crews took him to a Portland hospital for treatment to ensure he wasn’t hypothermic after entering the cold water.

  • Swimming pools have been part of California’s lifestyle for decades, but as the state struggles through its fourth year of a worsening drought, communities are putting bans on filling pools or restricting new pool construction.

A handful of cities and water districts statewide have implemented restrictions on swimming pools, ranging from moratoriums on swimming pool construction to restrictions on draining and refilling pools. The California Pool and Spa Association, a trade group, has responded to restrictions with a “Let’s Pool Together” campaign that gives consumers tips on being more water-efficient.

“They’re trying to hammer us with the ‘we’re the culprits’ because we do pools,” said Blaine Enbody, who runs Enbody Custom Pools in Moorpark. “But if homeowners put in (landscaping), they are wasting more water than if they had a pool.”

  • Ever had such a big Saturday night that you ended up confusing a lifeboat with a lifeless body?
Well that was the reality for one drunken 22-year-old, who was found by police in a shipyard just after 4am on Sunday in the western town of Vannes.
Officers noticed the man kneeling by an inflatable boat and went to investigate, reported French newspaper Le Télégramme.
“He was underneath a boat, on his knees, trying to resuscitate a rubber dinghy,” local police told Le Télégramme.
The man told officers that someone was unconscious inside the vessel, but upon closer inspection officers discovered the young man was instead performing CPR on the inflatable boat itself.
To make matters worse, he had already called out firefighters to the scene – an emergency call that the police promptly cancelled.
