Shaolin monk Shi Liliang knows that persistence is key when attempting a difficult task. Especially if that difficult task happens to be running on water.

Shi has been training to run on water for ten years, using nothing but thin, floating boards for support.

On Thursday, he accomplished his record of running 125 meters across water, in his town of Quanzhou.

“It’s not for the faint-hearted,” Middleton told news agency Reuters (via the Toronto Sun), describing the hardcore race as “almost three Ironman swims and one and a half marathons.”

Princess Kate‘s younger sister, who turns 32 on Sunday, was not only inspired by the fitness element of the race but also by the beautiful scenery along the way.

“I was taken by the idea of competing in the stunning surroundings. Otillo has an edge to it that stands out above other endurance races,” she said. (Middleton will also be raising money for the Michael Matthew Foundation during the event.)

  • Organizers cancel world-famous Waikiki Roughwater Swim due to rough water

High-surf and rough conditions forced organizers to cancel the annual Waikiki Roughwater Swim in Waikiki Saturday, less than an hour before it was to start.

The event draws swimmers from Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Japan, including a few Olympic medalists and world champions.

Event organizers had been keeping a close eye on the weather all week and had to make the tough call.

“So, we feel horrible having people come all this way and have to not have the race, but it would’ve been very unsafe too to do today,” said event director Kaia Hedlund.

  • Women’sHealth: No workout burns calories and firms muscles better than swimming

A pool might not be the first place you think of going when you’re looking to shape up and slim down—but perhaps it should be. No other workout burns calories, boosts metabolism, and firms every muscle in your body (without putting stress on your joints) better than a swimming workout.

Look no further than superstar Natalie Coughlin to observe how water can whittle a sexy, sculpted silhouette. And you don’t have to be an Olympic gold medalist to get the perfect body. When researchers at Indiana University compared recreational fitness swimmers with non-swimmers, they found that swimmers of all ages had more lean muscle and trimmer waists and hips.

And while swimming may not offer the lace-up-your-shoes-and-go convenience of running, all you need are three key items—swimsuit, cap, and goggles—and you’re set to hit the water. So go ahead: Make a splash with one of the best workouts for women!

A Long Island teen is walking again months after he was paralyzed in a devastating swimming accident. On Wednesday, 17-year-old Nico Fiorello took a few steps unassisted and talked about his remarkable recovery. “Standing up here being able to walk is just amazing,” Fiorello said, standing alongside his doctors and parents at a press conference at Nassau University Medical Center.
