Fishermen in Western Isles boat tragedy ‘tried to swim’
Finlay Macleod of the Fishermen’s Mission said all four reported missing had made it to their life raft.
But two of them tried to swim for the shore, which was in sight.
One of the four was found safe, while another is still missing.
Two of the four men on the raft were later found to have died, whilst another is still missing.
Mr Macleod told the BBC: “Two of them decided to swim to the shore, which they could see.
“And during that swimming, one of them drifted away from the other and he was lost.”
He added: “The other one made it to the shore, and after clinging to the rocks for some considerable time he was rescued by the boat from the RNLI.”

Cate Campbell sustains wrist injury at Rio Olympic swimming trials after taking ‘an aggressive nap’
Commonwealth record holder Cate Campbell may require a painkilling injection in her right wrist to swim in Tuesday’s 100m freestyle Olympic trial final — all because she slept the wrong way.
Campbell, who injured the wrist when she took what she described as an “aggressive nap†last week, revealed after her heat swim this that a doctor is on standby to administer local anaesthetic into her wrist joint before the final if required.
“I’m an aggressive napper,†she explained. “It was sore in the morning and then I went for a nap during the day and slept on it again.
“It’s pretty good now. We have a doctor on standby in case it needs local but we’re hoping it doesn’t need that. It’s definitely improved. We’ve done some aggressive treatment on it. A bit more rest to come and it should be fine.â€

Olympian Franklin promotes swim lessons in Arizona
Swimming champion Missy Franklin will compete in metro Phoenix next week as part of her preparation to make a second Olympic team.
She made a pre-meet appearance Friday to champion a greater cause, water safety, in her new role as a USA Swimming Foundation ambassador. Franklin, a five-time 2012 London Olympic medalist, did a hands-on swim lesson with a dozen children at the Salvation Army Kroc Center in south Phoenix, the 41st stop nationally since 2007 in the Make a Splash tour promoting the importance of swim lessons in drowning prevention.
“This is such a dream come true and a perfect fit for me,” said Franklin, who spoke later at a USA Swimming Foundation luncheon also attended by U.S. Olympic/Arizona State swim coach Bob Bowman, Rowdy Gaines, Michael Phelps, Allison Schmitt and Chase Kalisz. 22-time Olympic medalist Phelps, who trains at ASU, also promotes water safety through his swim program, offered locally by Pitchfork Aquatics at ASU Poly and West campuses.
