A swimmer who disappeared Monday evening in the Gulf of Mexico has been found dead, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said.

The search began at 6:12 p.m. Monday after authorities got reports of a man in distress in the water off John’s Pass.

Deputies say 31-year-old Hector Colon and his roommate, 34-year-old Angel Nunez, were in the water when they began to feel the current getting stronger.

“Nunez was able to swim backward to stay afloat, but Colon began yelling for help before disappearing under the water,” the sheriff’s office wrote.

Nunez went to shore where a beachgoer called 911.
