Australia’s swim school shame
When I was growing up, I learned to swim at school.
We brought our swimming bags twice a week and swam in the 25-metre pool on the grounds of our Brisbane state school.
These days, very few schools even have water safety on the curriculum — let alone their own pool — and a new report says if parents don’t step up and book their kids into swimming lessons outside school, come summer we’re going to see more children drowning in rivers, pools and the ocean.
The 2017 Coast Safe report, released today, has discovered Aussie kids children are not learning vital water-safety skills because of costs and accessibility.

Alligator Lighthouse Still Standing, Swim Cancelled
Standing defiantly in the distance off Islamorada is a century-old lighthouse that has survived much more than the wimpy winds of Hurricane Irma.
The Alligator Lighthouse was built in 1873, before Miami even existed. The name honors a pirate-fighting schooner that sank there in 1822 and was blown up so brigands couldn’t use it. The lighthouse is in the midst of a $2 million rehab that is partially funded by an annual swim that has been canceled, coordinators said yesterday.
About 400 people from all over the world had planned to head to Islamorada/Lower Matecumbe Key for the nine-mile swim, which was celebrating its fifth year. They would have come from as far away as Australia and England, says Betsy Keteltas, an organizer of the event.
“There is so much debris in the water that it is not safe for boats, let alone swimmers,” she says. “We are asking swimmers to donate their entry fees, and almost everyone has.”

We have talked about freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke breakouts. Now we will talk about the butterfly break out. In order to do a successful butterfly breakout you must do it fluidly. You need to keep the momentum of the push and underwater kicks to do a seamless transition to your stroke. There is one advantage of the butterfly breakout that the other strokes don’t have. Your legs will continue doing the same movement. You just simply keep doing dolphin kicks throughout the whole transition from underwater kicks to butterfly stroke.
