California’s Children’s Pool in San Diego, also known as the Children’s Pool Beach, is a small, sandy beach area in La Jolla with a unique history. Originally constructed in 1931, the pool was created through the donation of Ellen Browning Scripps, a prominent philanthropist. She funded the construction of a seawall to provide a safe, protected area where children could swim without the dangers of strong ocean currents. Over the years, the pool became a popular spot not only for families but also for seals and sea lions, which started using the beach as a haul-out and birthing area. This development led to ongoing debates and legal battles over the years concerning the shared use of the space by humans and wildlife, making the Children’s Pool a focal point for discussions on environmental conservation and public access.

Following the gold medal win of Summer McIntosh in the 400-metre individual swimming medley at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Global News caught up with the Toronto-based champion’s family.

Mother Jill, father Greg and sister Jill McIntosh sat among the crowd in Paris on Monday, as they watched the youngest in their family make their country proud, after becoming the first Canadian woman take gold in the race that combines butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle – in that order.

“You can’t be at this level not being a very hard worker, so, we’re most proud about that and the person she is, and how she represents her country,” Jill McIntosh said, reflecting on the “surreal” victorious moment.

Summer’s first place victory comes just two days after the 17-year-old brought home a silver medal for Canada, in the 400-metre freestyle on opening night at the pool.
