In the midst of Italy’s hot summers—when the beaches are full of swimmers—the lifeguards keeping everyone safe bring in some much-needed, four-legged assistance. We’re talking about water rescue dogs. Dogs make ideal lifeguard partners as they remain calm under pressure and instinctively choose the safest path through the water currents back to shore. They can even stay afloat while paddling multiple swimmers to safety. Through his Italian School for Lifeguard Dogs, Ferruccio Pilenga has trained more than 350 volunteer pups to execute water rescues. Now THAT’s a good dog!
In China, we noticed that many people can’t swim. Asians and people in Asia tend to possess the natural skill of swimming, just like everyone else, so why is it that if you travel to China, you will notice that many people don’t know how to, or claim to not know how to swim?
As expats in China, we head to the beach, are not allowed to swim, and then discuss the topic. Enjoy!

The countdown for the 19th edition of LEN European Short Course Championships has begun. In 100 days, the Danish capital of Copenhagen will be ready to receive the top swimmers of Europe in beautiful state-of-the-art surroundings.
The five-day championships are to be staged in Royal Arena, where the European swimming elite will race in a temporary pool in front of a crowd of up to 6.000 spectators. The brand-new arena has already hosted great music acts like Metallica, Drake, The Weeknd and Bruno Mars, but come December the Danish national swimming team will be led by equally international names like Olympic medallists Pernille Blume, Rikke Møller Pedersen and Mie Ø. Nielsen, accompanied by Olympic finalist Viktor Bromer and a huge Danish national team.

Pernille Blume: The home crowd will be special
Pernille Blume herself is thrilled to be competing at home ground:
– I can’t wait to compete at the LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships on home ground in Copenhagen. It’s going to be a thrilling experience for me and the rest of the Danish team. We rarely get to have a Danish crowd on the stands cheering for us, so it’s going to be very special for us. I also can’t wait to swim in the brand new Royal Arena, and I’m sure it will be both intense and spectacular this December, says Pernille Blume.
High performance manager: We can’t wait to welcome Europe

It will be an absolutely amazing sporting event for everyone taking part in it, and we can’t wait to welcome swimming fans from all over Europe. A swimmer from Bear Creek Village is still healing after being bit by a river otter last month.
It’s now been more than two weeks since the attack. The 57-year-old says she’s been swimming in the lake almost every day for five years, and she’s never seen an otter, much less had one bite her.
“The first bite went straight through my foot from one side to the other,” says the swimmer.

It was a great summer, and your family made the most of it. Between vacation time, pools, or just hanging out in the backyard for a barbecue, you’re almost ready for school to start and the weather to turn cold.
But is your home ready? As a homeowner, you need to prepare your home for fall and winter months to protect the biggest investment in your life. Thankfully, this is not that hard. You start by examining the outside of your home.

Fall and winter can be hard on your house, especially what you have outside. That’s why preparing for colder months starts with your home’s exterior. Century Home Improvements has an excellent list of home maintenance tasks for the end of summer, including:
You can also ready your landscaping so it will look better through winter and when spring begins. Add a fresh layer of mulch so it looks great and traps moisture underground where your plants need it. You can also pull any dead plants and deadhead any annuals or perennials.
Once you are done preparing the outside of your home, you need to do some work on the inside. After all, this is where your family will be spending most of their time in the colder months.
As Redfin explains, frozen pipes can be a huge problem. Even if you live in the South, you know how the weather has been weird these past few years — freezes are still possible. That’s why you should follow these tips to avoid frozen pipes:
In addition to pipes, you need to worry about drafts. Having a leaky home makes everyone colder and drives up your energy bill. That’s why you need to install weatherstripping on exterior doors. Use a candle to find drafts, then cover them with weatherstripping. You can also use door sweeps and add some insulation to your attic.
Now that your home is protected from the bitter cold, you have one last task to prepare for fall and winter: Check the safety of your home.
Start by checking the batteries on smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. These will be vital to protecting your family when you’re running the furnace and space heaters, so make sure they are working properly. You also want to check your fire extinguisher, as these do expire after a number of years. Lastly, this is a great time to make sure any stairs are safe. Check the strength of the railings and consider installing slip guards, especially where your family comes in out of the snow.
The end of summer is often a bittersweet time. It’s sad to see summer leave, but you’re also ready for fall and winter. By tackling a few maintenance tasks, you can help your home be ready as well. Check the outside first and put away any outdoor furniture. Protect your pipes and eliminate any drafts. Then make sure your home is safe on the inside. Your family deserves a safe, warm home this winter.
