Croatian Diver Holds Breath for Record Long… for Autistic Kids
On Saturday, Croatian free diver Budimir Å obat, father to an autistic girl, held his breath while staying under water for 24 minutes 11 seconds, the Croatian state television channel HRT reported.
The record was set at a free-diving event called “static apnea”, a term used to describe motionlessly holding your breath.
Commenting on the record, Å obat said he could have held his breath for longer, but they had previously agreed on the timing with his coach and he had to interrupt the submergence.
“I am proud of all this. I have performed something unrivalled so far and have thus raised public awareness about autism and drawn broader attention to autistic kids,” the 52-year-old diver said, as reported by the Vecernji list portal.
The previous record in the static apnea discipline was set in February 2016 by Aleix Segura from Spain, as he held his breath underwater for 24 minutes 3 seconds at the 17th Mediterranean Dive Show in Barcelona.

Sydney great white shark attack victim ‘very lucky’ to be alive
A Sydney woman is “lucky” to be alive after she was bitten by a great white shark in Botany Bay.
The 55-year-old swimmer survived the first confirmed shark attack in Botany Bay in 25 years, and is recovering at St George Hospital.
The Hurstville local was doing breaststroke laps at Little Congwong Beach about 7pm on Friday when she was mauled by the juvenile shark, which experts believed measured between 2.7 and 3.2 metres long.
Randwick City Council says she was assisted about 20 metres to shore where paramedics treated “serious wounds” on her leg, but she is now in a stable condition.
Mayor Lindsay Shurey says the woman underwent surgery on Saturday morning for a “very large bite” below her right knee.
“I think she’s very lucky to still have her leg… and to survive,” Shurey said.
“She was swimming at dusk, which is never really recommended.”

The Chicago Winter Swimmers
Warning: These swimmers are trained athletes who are equipped and prepared for such harsh conditions. It can take years of training to be able to swim in freezing water, do not try this alone or without the proper coaching.
Open Water Chicago is a group of enthusiastic athletes who swim year-round in Lake Michigan. Steve, the founder of the group, started Open Water Chicago in 2007. Out of the hundreds who swim during the summer only a handful take to Chicago’s icy waters during the colder months when temperature regularly drops below 32 degrees.
