Mayor Ganim joined the Director of the Cardinal Shehan Center Terry O’Connor today to kickoff a free afterschool swim camp for 500 Bridgeport youth. The water safety and swim lessons are made possible through a $152,000 Pool Safely Grant Program (PSGP) awarded by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). “The staff in the Grants Department for the city worked hard to secure these funds because receiving water safety lessons can be the difference between life and death,†said Mayor Ganim. “Our youth will learn not only how to swim, but gain valuable water safety practices to be prepared when they are in a pool or any body of water.

Brain-eating amoebas are spreading—and that’s just as bad as it sounds
Prior to 2010, the northernmost case of amoebic meningitis in the U.S. was in Missouri. It is now as far north as Minnesota, as well as in states like Indiana and Kansas. In that 2017 review, the authors note that “with climate data showing consistently warming temperatures, the reports of PAM [or amoebic meningitis] cases outside of the southern-tier states is cause for concern,†continuing on to say that physicians in more northern areas should now be wary of N. fowleri. Climate change is going to warm up more of the world, and that means more people will live in places with waters friendly to N. fowleri—people who may not be aware of the dangers. Amoebic meningitis may be rare, but that doesn’t mean it can’t become more common. And knowing the signs could save your life.

Orange County Fire Rescue said the bus, carrying nine students to Magnolia School, and a Jeep were involved in a crash. The bus traveled into a yard and through a fence before nosediving into the pool.
Troopers said the Jeep swerved to avoid a dead cat in the road, prompting the bus to drive off the road.
Fire Rescue tweeted that the driver of the Jeep suffered non-serious injuries. She was taken to a hospital, officials said.
