Ben Lecomte ends bid to swim from Japan across Pacific after support boat suffers damage
On June 5 Ben Lecomte entered the ocean off Chiba Prefecture to begin his attempt at a record-breaking swim across the Pacific, with the aim of shining a light on ocean pollution and plastic contamination.
Now, almost six months and 1,500 nautical miles into the attempt and approaching the Pacific Ocean’s plastic accumulation zone (aka the Great Pacific Garbage Patch), the 50-year-old swimmer has had to abandon his attempt after his support boat, Discoverer, suffered irreparable damage to its mainsail in unprecedented storms.
“We’ve faced treacherous winds, rain and ocean swells that have forced us to alter our course, and the irreparable damage to the sail is an insurmountable blow,†Lecomte said recently from aboard the Discoverer.

2018 Antarctica Ice Kilometer Swim
The first official Antarctica Ice Kilometer Swim was held on 23 and 25 November 2018 at Port Lockroy, a natural harbour in front of the Antarctic Peninsula with 41-year-old Alexander Brylin of Russia, 55-year-old Yunfeng Wang of China, 44-year-old Leszek Naziemiec of Poland, 52-year-old Paolo Chiarino of Italy, 54-year-old Andrey Agarkov of Russia, 33-year-old Samantha Whelpton of South Africa, 51-year-old Sergio Salomone of Argentina, 45-year-old Clinton Le Sueur, 37-year-old Diego López Dominguez, 42-year-old Wyatt Song, 42-year-old Petar Stoychev, 25-year-old Victoria Mori, 46-year-old Jean Craven, and the 61-year-old Ram Barkai all successfully completing the 1 km ice swim.
