  • Record-breaking Hong Kong swimmer Kenneth To King-him has died suddenly aged 26 in the US, the Hong Kong Sports Institute has confirmed in a statement.

    To felt unwell in the locker room after a practice session in Florida, and was taken to hospital where he died on Monday night. He had been undergoing a three-month training programme with the Gator Swim Club of the University of Florida.

    “The Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) was deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden passing away of elite swimmer Kenneth To,” a statement said.

  • Olympic champion and swimming great Ian Thorpe is speaking openly about his battle with mental health to help others dealing with similar issues.

    The 36-year-old hopes that by talking about how he faces his own depression, and the strategies he’s learnt to cope with it, he can show others, especially young Australians, that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

    “I’ve been someone who has gone through mental health challenges at different times and realising that there is a light at the end of that tunnel and to be able to send a message to young people that ‘you might have these times that you do struggle’, but there is a way of getting out of that,” Ian tells Yahoo Lifestyle.

    The five-time gold medal winner, who is a patron of frontline youth service ReachOut, is this month supporting Laps for Life – a swimming challenge during March that aims to help raise awareness of mental health issues and the support available to those struggling.

    ReachOut has been changing the way people access help since launching as the world’s first online mental health service nearly 20 years ago.

    “I wanted to become involved with [Laps for Life] and asked if I could,” Ian tells us. “Reach Out does so many things for so many different issues, whether it’s things for LGBTIQ kids, or kids struggling with exam pressures, anxiety, depression, to people struggling with issues like suicide.”

  • Currently the air temperatures in Vardø range from -15 to -5 Celcius, with the regular gale force winds it often adds up to a wind chill factor of -25. The sea holds about +1 Celcius. I start most days with a dip in the harbour. Rather refreshing!Other then that it has been another busy couple of weeks at the Biotope office. We did a tour of the Varanger fjord, visiting a series of Biotope desgined architecture project. Our collegue Ben from the Biotope UK office visited Vardø (and showed off some solid Yorkshireness in his arctic initiation). It is spring in Varanger. Arctic style 😬 ❄️

  • A domestic violence suspect attempted to evade law enforcement on Saturday afternoon. It didn’t work.

    According to the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of a domestic violence incident in the vicinity of Bacara Resort near Goleta around 1 p.m.

    The suspect, 47-year-old Michael Reardon, fled the area when deputies arrived and started a pursuit on foot.

    Reardon jumped into the ocean and swam away from deputies, authorities stated.

    “After the suspect continued for a length of time to evade deputies by swimming in the water, deputies became concerned for his safety due to the temperature of the water,” the press release stated.
