With summer just around the corner, a new survey revealed that just over half of Americans knowingly contribute to swimming pools becoming dirtier.
The survey, conducted by Sachs Media Group, found that specifically 51 percent of people reported using public swimming pools as communal bathtubs. The people who participated in the survey reported they used the pools as a substitute for showering, as well as cleaning off after working out.
“When dirt, sweat, personal care products, and other things on our bodies react with chlorine, there is less chlorine available to kill germs,†said Dr. Chris Wiant, chair of the Water Quality & Health Council, in a press release. “Rinsing off for just 1 minute removes most of the dirt, sweat, or anything else on your body.â€

In the second episode of our new wellbeing series, Simon and his son Ethan, visit their local lido to swim together, a place where they can get away from everything and be together as father and son. Simon then takes part in some cold water swimming in the River Ouse. The practice is hugely beneficial in dealing with stress and depression, and Simon hears from some swimmers about how it’s benefited them.

22 Lifeguards Develop ‘Swimmer’s Itch’ After Exam in LA Lake
Twenty-two Los Angeles lifeguards have filed a grievance with the city for developing rashes and respiratory problems following a swim exam at a freshwater lake.
The Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday that the lifeguards were treated for “swimmer’s itch” — a condition caused by an allergic reaction to microscopic parasites.
The grievance claims the parks department was warned of the possible risk of parasites, but instructed the lifeguards to take the exam anyway.
