    Freckles, a giant manta ray, is about 30 years old. In her time she has beguiled hundreds of visitors to the shallow lagoons of Ningaloo Reef, a stretch of the Indian Ocean off Western Australia known for its extraordinary marine life. But one group of snorkelers recently realised that theirs was no ordinary encounter because Freckles, it appeared, was asking for their help.

    At the Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa in South Africa, the outdoor pools are near a busy watering hole where wildlife often gather. The pools are filled with saline as opposed to chlorine, since elephants come to drink out of them almost every day. The five-star lodge is on the Welgevonden Game Reserve in Limpopo, three hours outside Johannesburg.

    Divers have swum with a huge barrel jellyfish off the coast of Cornwall.

    Lizzie Daly, a biologist with Wild Ocean Week, said the creature was as big as her body.

    It is the largest species of jellyfish which is found in British waters, with the average diameter being about 40cm (16 inches).
