Freeze Divers. Freediving under ice, Russian freediver’s daring world record attempt
Andrey Matveenko is an experienced freediver and multiple Freediving World Championship medalist, but diving under the ice is a new experience for him. Freediving is challenging as it is, but doing it in the subzero temperatures and pitch-black darkness of a frozen sea pushes even the most experienced to the edge in this extreme sport. RTD joins Andrey as he heads for the White Sea to “see what they like about the cold†and attempt the world’s deepest dive under ice on a single breath.

Rome to bid for 2022 European Aquatics Championships
Rome intends to bid to host the 2022 European Aquatics Championships, following approval by mayor Virginia Raggi and the city council.
The announcement comes ten years after Rome hosted the World Swimming Championships in 2009, an event which was successful from a sporting point of view but which led to cases of corruption surrounding the expropriation of land as well as abandoned infrastructure.

Professionals, amateurs make a splash in Yangtze River swimming race
Over 50 professional swimmers from 15 countries battled it out in the water at the 45th Wuhan Yangtze River Crossing Festival. The race covered a distance of about 1,800 meters from Hanyangmen in Wuhan’s Wuchang District to Nan’anzui in the Hanyang District. Chinese swimmers won both the women’s and men’s individual championships. The event also attracted more than 2,500 amateurs who competed in a 35-team group race over 6,000 meters.

Man attacked by seal while swimming off Devon coast
The victim was taken to hospital after he was injured near Shoalstone Pool in Brixham, Devon, yesterday morning. Seals can get defensive when swimmers get too close to their pups and this is thought to have been the case in this situation. The attack prompted immediate warnings for swimmers to keep clear of seals.

Japanese record-breaking free diver Sayuri Kinoshita, 30, dies after fall from apartment
Record-breaking Japanese free diver Sayuri Kinoshita died Monday following a fall from her apartment in Okinawa Prefecture last week, according to police and her family.
Sayuri Kinoshita, 30, was rushed to hospital early Thursday morning following an emergency call from a neighbor who found her unconscious in a parking lot below her apartment in Yomitan. She was placed on life support and pronounced dead four days later, according to the police and her elder sister Sanae.
The police believe there was no foul play based on investigations at the scene, but said they still do not know why she fell.
