  • Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe has insisted the country will host this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games “without problem as planned”, despite growing international concern over the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking at a press conference today, Abe refused to waver from the stance adopted by Japanese officials and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that Tokyo 2020 will take place as scheduled.

The COVID-19 virus, which has so far killed more than 5,600 people and infected over 150,000 worldwide, has spread to over 130 countries, fuelling speculation and suggestions the Olympics and Paralympics will be postponed or cancelled.

The Greek leg of the Tokyo 2020 Torch Relay was cancelled this week, while numerous events, including Olympic qualifiers and test events, have been impacted by the coronavirus outbreak.

But Tokyo 2020 and the IOC have repeatedly insisted the Olympics will open as planned on July 24.

“We will overcome the spread of the infection and host the Olympics without problem as planned,” Abe said.

  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Friday disregarded President Donald Trump’s suggestion to postpone the 2020 Olympics, stating that they will “absolutely not” be postponed.

“The IOC and the organizing committee are not considering cancellation or postponement—absolutely not at all,” said Seiko Hashimoto, a former Olympic bronze medalist and Japan’s Olympic minister.

Hashimoto’s comments came just days after Trump said he thinks the committee should consider postponing the 2020 Olympics because of the coronavirus outbreak.

“I just can’t see having no people there. In other words, not allowing people,” Trump said Thursday at the White House. “Maybe, and this is just my idea, maybe they postpone it for a year.”

  • There was laughter in the air, amidst the sadness and confusion of the day.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association had announced in the hours preceding that the high school swim season was basically being shut down because of the coronavirus virus outbreak and athletes were still in shock to hear they would not be able to compete in the state swim and diving finals.

That didn’t stop them from getting together for one final practice, however.

  • This is not what I usually do on this site, but feel that I have to speak out, as president of a tiny swimming federation, and as a fellow human being.

Despite all good efforts made by federations and clubs around the world, canceling major meets and urging everyone to take care, I suspect that athletes are still trying to keep in shape, in case the Olympics happen.

This has to stop and can stop if the International Olympic Committee acts responsibly now!

Yes, I understand that there might be a big bill to pick up, but after all that is only money. I will go as far as to say, that if the IOC ever should have to go bankrupt, this would the most honorable reason. To save lives.

As soon as the Olympics are gone from our schedule, it should be natural for at least Olympic trials and qualification meets to be canceled, or morphed into meets that are maybe less significant but can be still fun and festive.

There is so much time being lost at the moment, trying to find solutions to a problem that really doesn’t have to be.

And there are so many human ressources being spent that would be to much better use right now figuring how to help out from within quarantine.

This has to happen now, in order for us all to try to get this pandemic under control, and hopefully lose as few lives as possible.

Never mind this sports season, it is pretty much already gone, at least if you judge it from the point of fairness and sportsmanship

Let’s take a break and weather this out, to meet again afterward in a true Olympic spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.

    Yours sincerely

    Rókur

  • “The Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) regrets very much that it has to announce the cancellation of the up-coming legs of the Greek leg of the Olympic Torch Relay. This is even more regrettable after the huge success of the relay during its first two days with big crowds gathering along the route and at the ceremonies. Unfortunately, the latest developments concerning the spread of the COVID-19 virus has led the HOC, in association with the Greek Ministry of Health, to the conclusion that this was the best possible decision in order to contribute to the containment of the virus. The Olympic Flame will be handed over as planned to the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee on Thursday, March 19th at the Panathenaic Stadium, although there will be no public in attendance.”
