• Paul Talty, Swim Ireland’s Associate Head of Performance Services (Physical), usually oversees land-based training for Ireland’s High Performance swimmers and divers, but today he’s got an everyday Upper Body Strength Workout for you.

It builds on last week’s shorter session (https://youtu.be/rJ-X4x5Aq2g), with great technique pointers along the way.

To do this workout, you just need yourself, and a resistance band.

    Upper Body Exercises:
    Push Up
    Horizontal Row
    Blackbird

Do 10 reps of each exercise.
Take 1min rest before starting the next set.
    Do four sets.

  • In this video we look at how we used an iPhone 11 Pro Max to shoot underwater shots for a short film. BUT we do NOT recommend doing this often. :) In a pinch it works great, but otherwise use a GoPro or any other waterproof action style camera.

  • These videos were shot originally for Endless Pools back in 2016, but have never featured on our channel. We hope you find them useful.

In this 1st episode, Swim Smooth Head Coach, Paul Newsome, discusses whether you should be holding your breath when you swim and a cool drill that you can do in any pool to improve this aspect of your swimming.

We’ll be releasing 22 of these videos over the next 22 days during the coronavirus lockdown. The videos are short and sweet – around 90s to 5 minutes for most – and you’ll be sure to pick up some useful points for your swimming.

  • The postponement of the Olympics is expected to add $2.7 billion to the cost of the Games for the host country, Japan. The cost estimate from December, when Tokyo Olympic organizers increased the figure to $12.6 billion. When Tokyo was awarded the Olympics in 2013, the bid committee projected total costs would be $7.3 billion.

  • It was a Winston-Salem native’s dream to make it to her second Olympics.

Then it was postponed until 2021.

“It’s heartbreaking,” said Kathleen Baker, who is an Olympic swimmer. “I agree with the decision and think that that’s what I wanted, but at the same time it’s hard to come to terms with something that you’ve worked so hard far to be postponed and so much uncertainty.”

  • The under-construction Athletes Village for the Tokyo Olympics could be used as a temporary hospital for coronavirus patients.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike has been talking about the possibility of occupying the massive development on Tokyo Bay, which is to house up to 11,000 Olympic and 4,400 Paralympic athletes and staff during the games.

The complex, which will eventually include 24 buildings, is expected to remain unoccupied with the Olympics delayed for 16 months.

Koike said the Athletes Village was “one of the options, but the village is not finished yet. We are talking about places that are available even today or tomorrow and checking a possibility one by one.”

  • It’s hard to imagine what our society will look like more than a year in the future, when right now each day seems to bring new, unpredictable challenges. Eventually, the COVID-19 pandemic will loosen its grip—but will it do so in time for the newly scheduled massive international event?

“Nobody really knows the answer to that right now,” says Wesley Pegden, a mathematician at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. “Right now the focus is on keeping the number of infections and deaths as low as possible.”
