Palm Desert Aquatic Center reopens lap swim amid historic heat wave
The Western United States continues to experience excessive heat, with dangerous temperatures here in the Coachella Valley. The Palm Desert Aquatic Center is providing some relief.
It’s a cool way to workout. The Palm Desert Aquatic Center is now back in business for lap swimming. Swimmers can sign up for a 45-minute time slot online. One person is allowed per lane in each session.
“We’re glad that it’s only a 45 minute swim session for people because we don’t want anyone coming back and overtly pushing themselves, so our guards are really paying attention to how often someone’s stopping at the wall, how hard they’re pushing themselves, if they’re coming out and resting on a chair, because you know, a lot of these people haven’t been in the water for about five months so we want to make sure people come in and you take your swim slow,†said David Keyes, the aquatic manager.

Beachgoers form human chain to save swimmer at Durdle Door
Beachgoers formed a human chain to drag a struggling swimmer to safety in a dramatic rescue at Durdle Door.
Witness Emily Foote said: “It was a very traumatic rescue by some very brave members of the public of a swimmer who owes his life to them all.
“It should serve as a warning of the dangers of the sea and tide especially in these winds as so many putting themselves at risk.”

Jorja Smith By Any Means video features British swimmer Alice Dearing
Singer Jorja Smith has used her new music video to amplify British open water swimmer Alice Dearing’s work around diversity.
It features Smith’s friends and family, as well as 23-year-old Dearing, who has competed at three World Championships and is on course to become the first black woman to represent Great Britain in swimming at the delayed Tokyo Olympics next year.
Last year, Dearing became the lead ambassador for the Black Swimming Association, a charity launched to encourage more black people to swim.
And Smith, who was named best British female solo artist at the 2019 Brit Awards, has spoken publicly to champion Dearing’s work to “increase diversity in aquatic areas and break down the barriers”…
