It’s easy to look at Mick Fanning and think life’s a beach. He’s a three-time world surfing champion who has earned millions of dollars doing what he loves. He even part-owns a brewery. But what on the surface looks like a dream existence masks years of pain and suffering below. Now for the first time, the 39-year-old surfer is talking about his deep blues, which at their worst meant he didn’t leave his house for months on end. Tom Steinfort reports that Fanning’s tough times began after his epic battle with a shark in 2015. Most of the world thought he was indestructible, but the truth could not have been more different. It has taken five difficult years, but now with help from his mates, his mum and his fiancée, Mick Fanning has risen from the depths. He also has a brand-new reason not to leave home: fatherhood.

Living and working in a small bubble can be both good and bad, depending on the situation. It’s tough being able to remain only in one spot without any family or outside basketball friends.

But it can also be fun and at times educational. That’s how some members of the Boston Celtics are approaching their stay at Disney World in the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

    The result is heartwarming content.

Tacko Fall, the Celtics 7-foot-5 rookie, is still learning how to swim. So with a pool at their disposal, his teammates Enes Kanter and Jaylen Brown started helping him.

A nearly eight-hour search for a person trying to swim from Dover to Calais unaccompanied has ended after he was spotted by a passing vessel.

Emergency services launched a major operation to try to locate the male swimmer, who was eventually found just 500 metres off Dover.

A helicopter and rescue teams were dispatched to the sea off Kent after the coastguard received a call from a member of the public saying a friend was trying to cross to France.

The 27-mile stretch between Dover and Calais can be dangerous and is home to the world’s busiest shipping lane.

The rescue operation started just after midday and continued until nearly 8pm on Sunday.

When found, he was cold and tired but otherwise well, the coastguard confirmed. He has been brought to shore and will be checked over by ambulance staff.

Experts in water safety and survival said the beaches in Singapore built on reclaimed land could spell trouble for people swimming there. The warning comes after a teenager drowned in waters off Changi Beach. The Singapore Civil Defence Force attended to 12 water-related incidents in the first half of 2020. In 2019, it responded to 36 cases, down from 38 the previous year.
