Beachgoers formed a human chain to drag a struggling swimmer to safety in a dramatic rescue at Durdle Door.

Witness Emily Foote said: “It was a very traumatic rescue by some very brave members of the public of a swimmer who owes his life to them all.

“It should serve as a warning of the dangers of the sea and tide especially in these winds as so many putting themselves at risk.”

Singer Jorja Smith has used her new music video to amplify British open water swimmer Alice Dearing’s work around diversity.

It features Smith’s friends and family, as well as 23-year-old Dearing, who has competed at three World Championships and is on course to become the first black woman to represent Great Britain in swimming at the delayed Tokyo Olympics next year.

Last year, Dearing became the lead ambassador for the Black Swimming Association, a charity launched to encourage more black people to swim.

And Smith, who was named best British female solo artist at the 2019 Brit Awards, has spoken publicly to champion Dearing’s work to “increase diversity in aquatic areas and break down the barriers”…

The purpose of the Shoulder Tap Drill is to help develop body roll and high-elbow recovery. This drill is best done using fins. Begin with a normal freestyle stroke and with your right arm extended at the front of the stroke, initiate the over-water recovery phase of the stroke with the left arm. When your left hand passes the shoulder, pause briefly and ‘tap the shoulder’ before piercing the left hand into the water. Continue with the left arm through the overwater recovery phase.

    Helpful Tidbits:
    – Focus on control and good body roll as you tap the shoulder through the recovery stage.
    – Maintain the extended position while the opposite arm/hand enters the water in front quadrant.
    – This will look like normal freestyle swimming but with a quick pause to briefly tap the shoulder.

Located in Hays County, Texas, about an hour outside of Austin, is a submerged sinkhole fed by a natural spring known as Jacob’s Well. The well draws both those looking for some cool water to splash around in, and adrenaline junkies willing to risk it all for the thrill of exploration. If you dive deep into the sinkhole, you’ll find an underwater cave system whose siren song has led multiple divers to their deaths.

According to Heather Alexander of the Houston Chronicle, at least a dozen divers have died attempting to explore the cave system, which can be accessed about 100 feet down the sink hole. Alexander spoke to Don Dibble, a diver local to Hays County, who has assisted in searches for missing explorers in the cave system. Explaining why so many people have risked their lives at Jacob’s Well, Dibble said,

“It was the forbidden fruit, the allure of doing something dangerous.”
