Beluga Sisters’ First Swim in KlettsvÃk Cove: Video
The beluga whales Litla-HvÃt and Litla-Grá (Little White and Little Grey) took their first swim in their new sanctuary home in KlettsvÃk, Vestmannaeyjar Islands, earlier this week, mbl.is reports. […]
The beluga sisters arrived in Vestmannaeyjar islands in June of last year after a 10,000-km (6,000-mile) long flight from Shanghai, where they had been living in the marine animal park Changfeng Ocean World.
At first, they had to be temporarily placed in a swimming pool for adjustment, but then they moved to KlettsvÃk cove in August of this year.
This week, they were for the first time released to fully explore their new home. As they did so, they were carefully monitored by their expert care team.
According to Sea Life Trust, which operates the sancutary, the whales will be gradually introduced to their 32,000-square-meter (344,000-sq-ft) KlettsvÃk home, which has a depth of up to 11 meters (36 ft).
Using this ‘Little Steps’ approach, the sisters will return to the sea sanctuary care pools over a short period of time while their health and well-being is assessed and monitored on a daily basis.

Swimmers fall ill after mystery water pollution off Russian coast
Russian authorities on Saturday ordered residents to stay away from a popular beach in the country’s Far East due to unexplained water pollution.
The environmental group Greenpeace dubbed it an “ecological disaster,” saying the pollution made some surfers sick.
Authorities said preliminary tests revealed elevated levels of oil products and the chemical phenol in the water.
Earlier this week, the region’s acting natural resources minister Alexei Kumarkov said tests showed levels of oil products and phenol were 3.6 and 2.5 times higher than usual.
“The only thing it is possible to say now is there are contaminative substances in the water. Final tests are not ready yet,” said Vladimir Solodov, Kamchatka’s regional governor.

Canada’s artistic swim team halts training, undergoing conduct review
Canada’s artistic swim team has stopped training following complaints from athletes.
The Canadian team had just resumed preparations for the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games when it was pulled from the pool Monday at Montreal’s Olympic Park Sport Centre.
Canada Artistic Swimming chief executive officer Jackie Buckingham would not identify the exact nature of the complaints.
“We have suspended our operations for hopefully a short period of time while we do an internal review of some of the information that we’ve been provided through a couple of athletes and several others,” Buckingham told The Canadian Press.
“There have been conduct-related comments. They’re talking about things like athlete safety and this is a huge priority for Canada Artistic Swimming.”
