  • Kayakers swallowed by a humpback whale in Avila Beach – California

    Warning, strong language

Two women were enjoying the day among a group of humpback whales feeding in Avila Beach, California. Suddenly a bait ball appeared next to their kayak and a whale followed the fish, opening its entire mouth to grab them. What the whale did not expect was to take a kayak with two people. Despite the danger and fright, both left unharmed, as the whale soon opened its mouth and released them.

A whale cannot swallow human beings because its throat is very narrow. That is why it feeds only on small fish and krill. But even so, it could have caused fatal injuries due to the strength of the jaw.

Researchers are trying to identify the whale to monitor it and see if it is okay with it too.

Enjoy our chat with Catherine Breed, marathon swimmer and social activist! We hear all about her experiences of swimming across Lake Tahoe and the North Channel (the sea between Ireland and Scotland!). We talk about an encounter with a great white shark and how she prepares mentally and physically for such epic swims (12 hours! 58 degree water! Jellyfish stings!). She is also passionate about giving back and encouraging people to “get in the water!” She recently swam the Monterey Bay in CA and raised $3,000 for Diversity in Aquatics, an organization that promotes water safety, education and drowning prevention for minority groups. Catherine is such an inspiration – enjoy the episode!
