Pool Contractor Photographed Damaged Garage 36 Hours Before Florida Condo Fell | New York Post
Troubling photographs taken by a contractor in the basement garage of the Champlain Towers South condo 36 hours before it collapsed reveal cracked concrete, exposed and severely corroded rebar and pools of water on the floor.
“There was standing water all over the parking garage,†the commercial pool contractor, who snapped the startling images, told the Miami Herald.
The contractor, who asked not to be named, visited the building last week to prepare a bid for cosmetic work on the pool and to provide the cost of new equipment as part of a multimillion-dollar restoration project at the 40-year-old structure, the outlet reported.
The man said he had gone into “some scary places†during his decades of work, but was particularly struck by the lack of maintenance in the basement — and that the amount of water there was so unusual that he mentioned it to a building worker named Jose, according to the Herald.
“He thought it was waterproofing issues,†the contractor told the paper of the employee. “I thought to myself, that’s not normal.â€
He said Jose told him they pumped the pool equipment room so often that the pump motors had to be replaced every two years, but that the man never mentioned any structural damage.
The contractor told the Herald that the deepest puddle was near parking spot 78, in an area right under the pool deck where engineer Frank Morabito in a damning 2018 private study flagged “major structural damage†caused by a leaky pool above the parking garage.

Gas Leak Responsible for ‘Eye of Fire’ in Mexican Waters, Says Mexican Oil Company | CNN
A blaze on the surface of the Gulf of Mexico resembling a large “eye of fire” has been brought under control, according to Mexico’s state oil company Pemex.
Orange flames resembling molten lava were pictured on social media and dubbed an “eye of fire” on social media because of the blaze’s circular shape, as it raged a short distance from a Pemex oil platform.
In a statement, Pemex said the fire, blamed on a gas leak from an underwater pipeline, happened at 5:15 a.m. local time off the coast of Campeche.
The fire, which was close to an oil platform, was put out by 10:45 a.m. local time, and no injuries or evacuations of the facility have been reported.

Ex-Cal Swimmer Nathan Adrian in ‘Fighting Spirit’ Beer Commercial
You won’t see former Cal swimmer Nathan Adrian at the Olympics this summer, but you can still see him on television.
The five-time Olympic gold medalist is the subject of a beer commercial that celebrates the “fighting spirit.â€
The 32-year-old Adrian, who has participated in three Olympics, certainly personifies the fighting spirit. He recovered from surgery for testicular cancer to compete in the Olympic Trials last month.
He talked about the diagnosis in the winter of 2018 while still hoping to participate in the 2020 Games, which eventually became the 2021 Games.
Adrian was cleared to train under certain conditions in 2019, then reported in April 2019 that his tests came back clean.
Adrian participated in the Olympic Trials in May, which was a victory of sorts, but failed to qualify for the Olympics in his specialties, the 50 and 100 freestyle.
Nonetheless he personifies the “fighting spirit†the Mexican-based beer company is looking for.
