How Olympic Divers Make the Perfect Tiny Splash | Vox
Elegant Olympic dives fly by in a matter of seconds. Because of that, it’s hard to know what to look for when you try to judge the sport from your couch. One thing that’s easy to see, though? The splash.
If you’ve watched any Olympics diving coverage, you may have noticed that the splashes athletes make are tiny. Divers spend years training to perform with a minimal splash, in the same way, that gymnasts train to stick their landings.
In this video, Team USA’s head diving coach Drew Johansen explains the three major components he uses to guide his athletes towards smaller splashes: the above-water position, the underwater swim, and the underwater pike.
And while the sport of diving isn’t all about getting splashes, a small splash is the perfect punctuation to a job well done.

Tokyo Olympics: Dominant Florian Wellbrock Wins Marathon Swim Gold
Germany’s Florian Wellbrock added Olympic gold to his world title in the men’s marathon swimming at Tokyo 2020 on Thursday.
The 23-year-old earned his second medal of the Games having already won bronze in the 1500m freestyle.
He started strongly and held onto the lead throughout, finishing more than 25 seconds ahead of Hungary’s Kristof Rasovszky.
Italian Gregorio Paltrinieri completed the podium at the Odaiba Marine Park.
“I need five minutes to realise what happened today. Crazy. Really,” said Wellbrock after the gruelling 10km swim.
“The first 7km was really easy. The water was really warm, so then I keep up the pace and the last leg was horrible. The temperature today was the biggest competitor. I beat it and I beat everything in this race” he added.

Robin Elliott meets Former Olympic Swimmer Mark Foster
Former Team GB Olympic swimmer Mark Foster is encouraging us to change our water behaviors at home, taking on a wild swim to demonstrate the volume of water that could be saved if we changed our water habits
The UK could face water shortages in as little as 25 years unless action is taken through a combination of climate change and growing demand for water because of population growth putting our freshwater resources are under increasing pressure. If everyone in the UK reduced their water use by only a quarter (approximately 33 liters a day), in one year there would be enough water to fill 30,000 more lakes of the same size.
As conservation charity WWF and Finish team up to replenish 500 million liters of fresh water in our most water-stressed regions. Robin Elliott has been talking to Mark Foster about the wild swimming challenge as well as the small changes we can all make that will make a big difference to the UK’s freshwater. Mark also gives us his thoughts on Team GB’s best medal hopes in the pool at Tokyo 2020.
