An intense storm on Wednesday wreaked havoc in Spain, causing severe flooding in some coastal towns like Alcanar, leaving thousands of people without electricity and forcing the closure of some roads and rail links
The strong water stream overturned and smashed cars as it flooded highways and roads, and one man said “we had to swim out of the cars” to reach safety.
Firefighters kept working on Thursday to retrieve dozens of vehicles trapped in the floodwaters.
Some streets in Alcanar quickly turned into torrents, with a powerful stream of water pushing cars, furniture, and trees towards the coastline.
No fatalities have been reported.
