    In fact, according to Pim Koeslag, co-founder of the company and its watchmaker, it was the princess herself who jokingly suggested that the company should have a ladies’ watch. “We promised her to start the development the next day,” Koeslag said. “And we actually did.”

  • I must confess, this story is so far out that I catch myself checking and re-checking that I’m not reading The Onion or something like that. The Haitian woman who was found floating in a public Fall River pool on Tuesday, apparently did drown in the pool on Sunday, with a boy noticing her going under, life guards being alerted, the people accompanying her knowing that she was missing, and health inspectors checking the pool on Monday and Tuesday.

  • They don’t have eyes per se, but apparently detect light and form images by the way the shadows from the spines are falling on the surface of the body, creating one huge all-compassing compound eye. It is not 20/20-vision, but maybe as good as that of a nautilus. Still sounds confusing to me. Via www.sciencedaily.com.

  • According to a recent nationwide survey from YouGov, british adults would rather be a world class swimmer than athlete, golf player or ice skater. Via swimming.org.

    The question to the more than 2800 adults was, “Imagine that you could be world-class at one particular sport. Which sport would you choose?”. Swimming came out fourth among 33 sports, only beaten by really lucrative sports like football, Formula 1 racing and tennis.

    Split into gender, women ranked swimming second-highest only behind tennis. Men go more after the money, wanting to be a football player, Formula 1 driver, golf, cricket or tennis player, before choosing the stunning physique of a swimmer.

  • At the Maria Lenk Trophy in May, 4 Brazilian athletes including Olympic and world champion César Cielo tested positive for furosemide, a diuretic banned because it can mask the use of doping products. The Brazilian doping control panel decided that only a warning was necessary because the swimmers have never produced a positive test before and had not intended to cheat.     In a statement on his website translated from Portuguese here on SwimNews.com, Cielo defends himself by arguing that this was a case of cross-contamination.

    All data was laid out before the panel and it was proven that the presence of the substance was caused by cross-contamination during the handling of a supplement.

    I have always use this supplement and previous controls have never previously presented a problem. Given the trust I have in this supplement, I think this has been an isolated case. Because of the trust placed in the product, other athletes also used the supplement.

    The other swimmers tested positive are Nicholas Santos, Henrique Barbosa and Vinicius Waked. Craig Lord isn’t very happy with the inconsistency of treatment of positive testing athletes, read more here on SwimNews.com

    According to The Swimmers Circle, the pharmacy that Cielo used is taking full responsibility for the cross-contamination. In their haste to prepare his order, they stopped what they were doing and neglected to practice proper handling and cleaning practices. Nice.
