Pál Joensen won the men’s 800 freestyle at the 2011 Duel in the Pool a minute ago, in a new Faroese and Nordic record of 7:36.24. Convincing victory too, as USA’s Michael Klueh was No. 2 in 7:39.90, and Denmark’s Mads Glæsner No. 3 in 7:42.27. Pál’s former Faroese record was from back in the supersuit days, 7:43.38 from the European Championships in Istanbul 2009, the Nordic of Mads Glæsner 7:39.45 from the same event. Love it when engineers mess with our conventions (as an engineer myself :-). And by the way … this need for the model to wear an in principle illegal modesty suit to make the video ‘safe for work’, is a real and practical problem in the locker rooms! Hidden Water Pools founder Stefan Kanetis designed this system to aid his mother Delicia, who for many years was a professional dancer, but later paid the price with severe arthritis and muscle damage in her lower extremities. Her doctor suggested that in order to avoid the wheelchair, she needed to exercise daily in a warm body of water over 92 degrees (Fahrenheit, I hope, that’s 33 degrees Celcius). But she had trouble getting in and out of a pool. Cue her loving son, Delicia has now her very own James Bond thing in the backyard, and is doing very well. Via Neatorama

Ouch, the Duel in the Pool started with a bang, with USA setting a world record in the women’s 4×100 relay, 3:45.56 to Europe’s 3:51.04. American swimmers were Natalie Coughlin, Rebecca Soni, Dana Vollmer and Missy Franklin, old record was USA 3:47.97 at the Manchester 2009 Duel in the Pool. Coughlin even set an American record in the 100 backstroke with a 55.97 compared to her previous 56.08 from Dubai last year. It is uphill for Europe from now on! See result list here.

As a swimmer on her college team at the American University of Beirut, it never made sense to Hind Hobeika that practices were organized according to heart rates taken after the swims, or with watches or belts that disturb and slow you down. So she invented the ButterflEYE goggles that read the pulse in the temporal artery, and signal back with green light if you’re on target, yellow if you need to speed up, and red if you need to slow down. The prototype is a bit bulky, but she won a 3rd place in the Qatar-based reality TV show Star of the Science, similar to the U.S. show American Inventor, and has been granted $100,000 to improve her invention.
