Advanced Bionics announced yesterday that they have received approval in the US and Canada for Neptune, the world’s first and only swimmable, waterproof sound processor. Designed to help cochlear implant recipients hear in and out of the water, it can be worn anywhere and way they choose, such as in the hair, on an arm, under a collar, or in a pocket. Parents will appreciate features like the removable controls that make it tamper-proof, and of course that their children now can be able to hear safety instructions, and enjoy the pleasure of hearing in general what happens in and around the pool or bath. Airline pilot and extreme freediver Herbert Nitsch freedived to at depth of 700 feet (-214 m) on June 14th 2007, putting him way ahead of his nearest competitors in the ‘no limits’ category. Now he is preparing for a 800 feet (-214 m) in the summer 2012, in this “torpedo sled” facilitating the descent and ascent with a underfoot ballast system and an overhead inflatable buoy. His ultimate goal is the ‘legendary’ (some would say ‘crazy’) barrier of 1,000 foot (-305 m).

Dana VollmerAccording to Universal Sports, U.S. swimmer Dana Vollmer discovered this year that she is allergic to gluten and eggs, meaning no bread and no all-American breakfast. Recently she and her husband discovered a solution in the form of gluten- and egg-free pizza crust, that tastes like normal pizza, and that she therefore uses for pizza and bread. “So basically I’m living on pizza, which I never thought that I would.”

31-year-old champion butterflyer Geoff Huegill may change the habit of a lifetime and wear a cap in international competition, following the launch of Speedo’s new Fastskin3 “racing system” of suit, cap and goggles.

“The hardest thing with ‘fly is that as you put your head in the water, it tends to push the cap up,” he said. “But I think this system is far ahead of anything else that has been put together and I don’t think you can get the full effect if you wear the goggles without the cap. I’m going to have to do a lot of testing in training and competition to see what suits me best.”

In this article, head of Speedo’s Aqualab development laboratory Tom Waller even claims that this new system is faster than the controversial LZR polyurethane-panelled bodysuits (!)

“The system is a radically different perspective and we believe we’re the only manufacturer to have ever designed something to work in unison. Taken together this is the fastest stuff we’ve ever created”
