“I just remember hearing a crunch, darkness and next thing I knew was in the water, underwater,” says Eric Tarantino, shark attack victim. “Everything was quiet and I could see the shark.” Via Central Coast News

2011 Salnikov Cup medal winners
So, tired of waiting for the results in English on www.saknikovcup.ru, I’ve fought my way through the result list in Cyrillic letters on russwimming.ru this evening, listing the medal winners in English by using the little I remember of Russian from high school.
Most noteworthy results are Nikolay Skvortsov’s (RUS) 1:50.55 in the 200 butterfly and Elena Sokolova’s (RUS) 4:01.93 in the 400 freestyle, earning each of them the Silver Shark statuette. Also Danila Izotov’s (RUS) 1:42.83 in the 200 freestyle, and Job Kienhuis’ (NED) 14:30.14 in the 1500 freestyle. All short course meters.

Non-slip Arena WoW soles “Walk on Water”
WoW is a non-slip “Walk on Water” outsole technology that gives your Arena sandals a ‘perfect grip’ no matter if the floor is wet or not. Exciting video, for a moment I wondered if they’d chase each other into (onto?) the pool, but (spoiler alert:) no such luck! :-)

Stephanie Rice suffers shoulder infection following surgery
Triple Olympic champion Stephanie Rice has had a minor setback in her recovery from shoulder surgery last week, with an infection now forcing her to miss training. Rice’s doctor ordered her to avoid training today, “Doc said it was slightly infected. Got some antibiotics and can get into xtraining again tomorrow,” Rice tweeted. Coach Michael Bohl says they’ll now wait until the infection is cleared before deciding when she can swim again, hopefully later this week. Via Herald Sun and The Sydney Morning Herald

Florida diver sets world record for longest scuba dive in saltwater
Earlier this month, a Central Florida diver broke the world record for longest saltwater dive by almost five minutes after spending two days under turbulent seas. 45-year-old Allen Sherrod dove in at 10:12 AM Thursday morning December 1st when the sea was flat, but that swiftly changed and conditions deteriorated, meaning he had to spend much of his time kneeling on the sea floor to stabilize himself and prevent seasickness, while clinging to an artificial reef to fend off strong currents. But he broke the now former record of 48 hours, 8 minutes and 7 seconds, now 48 hours and 13 minutes, having only a few ribs broken and hands swollon and skin broken and stuff like that. The Eco Extreme is a rugged iPhone pool deck dock
The Eco Extreme is a rugged all terrain speaker case that works with every mp3 player or cellphone with a headset jack, including the iPhone, iPod Touch, Motorola Droid and Blackberry. Able to withstand being submersed 1 meter in water for up to 30 min, and floatable to minimize that potential problem. Most rugged cases only provide headphone access, but this one’s got a 3W speaker with a simple volume knob on front, for you to share your music with everyone :-)Via appadvice.com

Aussies to take the underwater ironing world record back from the Dutch
So there is a “Underwater Extreme Ironing” battle going on that many of us haven’t heard of, between Australia and the Netherlands and UK, Poland, New Zealand and probably other countries too. The Netherlands hold the record of 173 scuba divers ironing underwater simulteneusly in March, but now Australia wants the record back, aiming for a whopping 200. Read Diamond Valley Leader.“The latest sport combines the thrills of an outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt,†Mrs Azzopardi said.
“I am aiming for around 200 divers to iron out the record, so to speak, and show those Dutchies what us Aussies are made of.â€

Garrett Weber-Gale enjoying himself at the Next Restaurant
Food connoisseur Garrett Weber-Gale has been out visiting the Next Restaurant Chicago, ‘explorers of world cuisine’. Looks like a fun ride, with something in a cardboard box, drawing on your plate, meal packed in a WWF thermos, sweet potatoes on fire and ice to be licked off a beater. And it was great, he tweets.
