  • Celebrating the Irish brewery’s 250th anniversay, Guinness had a submarine stationed in Stockholm’s harbor refitted with fancy lights and decor, and held a contest for to people to enjoy their stout at depths never before experienced. Guinness also celebrated by signing an incredible 9,000 year lease on its brewing property(!). Via DailyTech.

  • Returning from the Debrecen 2012 European Swimming Championships, coach Finn Zachariassen and swimmer Sindri Þór Jakobsson came to closed doors at their Bergen base, all municipality swimming pools closed because of strike. This is of course a major crisis, with Jakobsson vying for an Olympic spot at the Dutch Open in Amsterdam in two weeks. They make do with dryland for the time being, crossfit and bicycling, but have to find a wetter solution fast. Via BT.no

  • “Americans love to swim: 93 million people do so and spend $1.4 billion on suits every year. For professional swimmers, this means both lucrative sponsorship and a deep-pocketed support organization — USA Swimming raises about $100 million a year, from its nearly 300,000 members’ registration fees, taking a share of about a sixth of that money for its own revenue. Much like running, swimming is a sport in which the elites are supported by the hobbyists.   • As sole provider of public Wi-Fi in the Olympic Park this summer, BT claims it will be the largest high density Wi-Fi venue deployment ever, including 1,000 access points at nine Olympic venues, and 500,000 across London by the times that the Games begin in July. They already have 475,000 hotspots up and running. Access will be free for BT Broadband customers while millions of other smartphone users will apparently have use included in their contracts due to agreements with a number of UK and international network providers, and others the opportunity to by pre-paid Wi-Fi vouchers.
