To help prepare for track meets, competitive 5K races and especially the Olympics, Boston-based runner Ruben Sanca runs 116 miles per week, takes vitamins and mostly watches his diet. Synchronized swimming has never looked so good thanks to the Twinscam, invented by Japanese broadcaster NHK in 2010, simultaneously showing swimmer’s torsos above water and their legs below it. A solution to a common problem in water events, that because of the way light refracts and reflects differently above and below water, heavy image processing needed for a camera to do both, we’ve only been able to see shots that show one point of view at a time. Wow, apparently (and thankfully?) it was just a playful calf leaping out of the water 10-30 feet away from two boats near Tofino, British Columbia, Matthew Thornton capturing this most awesome photo on the other boat, video below captured with an iPhone.
