    South African swimmers, both new and seasoned, are embracing the new standards introduced to this year’s Olympic Games by the International Olympic Committee. Most athletes are in consensus that swimming is becoming faster and more competitive, and that qualifying times have to be adjusted accordingly. The swimmers spoke at the National Swimming Championships hosted by Gqeberha at the Newton Park Swimming Pool.

    The GB Aquatics Olympic Trials were one of the best produced and quickest meets we’ve seen in the LC pool in a long time outside of an Olympics or a World Championships. Swim meets at this level typically run pretty smoothly, but when dealing with as many moving parts as you do at a swim meet…something is bound to go wrong.

    Day two of Swimming South Africa’s National Championships are underway in Gqeberha and the country’s top swimming stars are vying for a spot on the team going to the Olympics set to take place in France in July. Among these stars is veteran Chad le Clos, who has already secured his spot for his fourth Olympic sojourn. Young gun, Pieter Coetzé, will also take to the water with other big names such as Tatjana Schoenmaker, Kaylene Corbett and Lara van Niekerk who are all aiming for Paris. This will be no easy task, as the International Olympic Committee, has tightened the qualifying times.
