A pool at a disused Derbyshire quarry, known locally as the Blue Lagoon, has been dyed black in a bid to deter people from swimming in it.

Despite the water at the quarry at Harpur Hill, near Buxton, having a pH level of 11.3 dozens of people still swim there.

Bleach has a pH level of 12.3 and signs warn swimmers the water could cause skin complaints.

Swimmers are also warned the water contains rubbish and dead animals.

Potentially record-breaking heat this week has metro area kids flocking to local pools to cool off.

The drowning of a 4-year-old boy in Thornton, Sunday, has the American Red Cross sending a reminder for parents to keep a close eye on their kids at the pool.

“Most cases of drowning occur with kids that are under the age of six due to a lack of parental supervision,” said Wheat Ridge Aquatics Supervisor Barb Kloberdanz.

Griffith Institute for Educational Research, recently revealed children who had learned how to swim from a young age, reached many developmental milestones earlier than other children the same age, who had not.

Some of these milestones included visual-motor skills such as cutting paper, colouring-in and drawing lines and shapes; mathematical-related tasks; and literacy and numeracy.
