Two people have died after apparently getting caught in strong rip currents.

Fourteen-year-old Dushay Morales of Winter Haven was swimming with his younger brother near Anna Maria Island when he disappeared Saturday afternoon. Manatee County Sheriff’s Office deputies discovered his body Sunday morning.

In a separate incident, a 30-year-old man drowned while swimming in Ormond Beach in Volusia County.

Far out swimming relevant … but this fun ad made me remember swim coaching guru Bill Boomer’s talk about dogs and cats in swimming, the point there being that we should make room for also the “cats” in swim training. Maybe the cats should just give up their lying about and “be more dog!” :-)

    Here is coach Boomer:

Bishan Rajapakse, a 38-year-old doctor from Bondi, was knocked unconscious for 10 seconds when he was struck by a whale, thought to be a southern right, while surfing at Bondi Beach on Sunday morning.

The surfer was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital and is in a satisfactory condition. “It was a near drowning,” said Gordian Fulde, director of the emergency department at St Vincent’s. “But he has no broken bones. He will probably go home tomorrow.”

See swimthecostabrava.com, they have an interesting open water swimming event coming up in 76 days (21-22 September 2012), and regular “Secret Swims” training sessions every Saturday and Sunday.

This season our technical team offers all open water lovers the possibility to indulge in a different type of training in the most spectacular spots off the beaten track of the Catalan coast.

Secret Swims are born out of this philosophy. “Secret” in this context means that, on the one hand, training takes place in uncrowded and secluded spots, and, on the other hand, the swimming location is not disclosed to the participants until the very same day of the activity.

These sessions are designed for swimmers who not only enjoy every single stroke but also delight in the beauty of the surroundings. Thus, on the day of the training we will make several stops to take pictures and have a snack in spots accessible only through swimming.
