Winning sisters Cate and Bronte Campbell muzzle embarrassing dad
Read The Age
Cate and Bronte Campbell booked their berths for the world championships, with father Eric notably absent from their entourage. […]
The girls, you see, are yet to recover from his memorable press conference during the national titles last year when the sisters made the Olympic team.
Flush with the excitement of seeing his daughters go 1-2 in the 50 freestyle after he made a last-minute decision to jet in, Eric release a barrage of one-liners and family anecdotes that, while all in good humour, had Cate and Bronte flushed with embarrassment.
The experience seems to have left a lasting mark on Bronte in particular, who, Cate revealed, has made her father sign a contract to never do that to them again.
“She actually wrote out a contract that said something along the lines of ‘to the best of my ability I will not embarrass my daughters on national television’,” Cate said. “She left a small margin of error because she said ‘to the best of his ability’, so she’s decided not to be too harsh on him. But she’s got that signed and it sits in her sock drawer, so he’s sworn off any interviews for the time being.”

James Magnussen says jealousy was a factor among teammates in London
Read The Australian
In a magazine interview, Magnussen said he believed envy of his high profile led to the claims by some of his Olympic teammates that he was given special privileges.
“Jealousy is a common human trait if one person’s getting more attention than others,” Magnussen told GQ.
“That was made very obvious to me in London . . . if the spotlight had fallen on someone else I’d have been jealous, too.
“I was aware of rumours I was getting special treatment and favouritism above others on the swim team, but I did everything I could to fit in.”

Hackett still setting the gold standard via coach Cotterell’s tales
Read The Age
Grant Hackett might be long gone from the competitive pool, having retired in 2008 after narrowly failing to become the first male swimmer to win three Olympic golds in the same event.
But the 1500 metres freestyle champion’s former coach Denis Cotterell has ensured Hackett’s legacy is not forgotten by his present crop of swimmers, who are regaled with comparisons to the pool legend to keep them sharp.
Young gun Jordan Harrison:
”I guess always being with Denis and seeing what Grant did under [him], it’s inspired me,” Harrison said. ”Denis refers to him probably nearly every session. He uses Grant’s efforts as motivation.
”He tells us ‘if you want to be as good as Grant you’ve got to go these times’. He knows what Grant did so to have his coach directly telling you what he did, telling you what sets he did, it’s awesome.
