Long-distance swimmer Jim Dreyer plans to swim 22 miles across Lake St. Clair this summer while hauling dinghies filled with 2,000 pounds of bricks. He has made direct crossing of each of the five Great Lakes, and is scheduled to begin this one on August 5, to raise funds and awareness for Habitat for Humanity. The swim is expected to take 30 hours, you can support by buying bricks here on jimthesharkdreyer.com.

“It will be a real ‘train of pain,’ symbolic of the pain felt by Michigan families trying to keep their heads above water,” Dreyer told The Grand Rapids Press. “However, instead of sinking with the weight of our burdens, I believe that together we can triumph and be the bricks that rebuild lives, rebuild communities, and strengthen the foundation of this great state.”

  • Dinko Jukic to skip Worlds following dispute with federation

Austrian swimmer Dinko Jukic will reportedly skip the world championships in July and August at Barcelona following an ongoing dispute with his national federation.

“The worlds this year will take place without me,” Jukic was quoted as saying in Tuesday’s online edition of Austrian newspaper Der Standard. “As long as not everything has been cleared, I won’t swim for the federation anymore.”

In August, the federation banned Jukic for 10 months for verbally attacking three of its officials during the European Championships three months earlier. The swimmer was in disagreement with the officials about when to return to Austria after the competition in Debrecen, Hungary.

The suspension led to a wave of negative publicity, prompting federation president Paul Schauer to step down three weeks later.

Jukic successfully fought his suspension in court, but the federation under new president Christian Meidlinger has appealed the verdict and stripped Jukic of his state funding for athletes.

The Center for Disease Control says a growing number of people who swim in public pools are getting sick.

Most are getting infections from bacteria.

So the Florida Department of Health in Lee County recommends testing those pools yourself before you dive in.

Bacteria could be swimming along with you and your kids.

“It’s scary and I try not to think of it when I bring my kids here,” said Alicia Williams, who visits the North Fort Myers Community Pool with her grandchildren.

Just a scene from the training a day before the LEN 2008 European Short Course Swimming Championships in Rijeka, Croatia. I remember it as a day focused on getting and trying out ‘supersuits’, some even wearing two at a time.
