Back in 2008, the Beijing National Aquatics Center — more informally known as the Water Cube â€” served as an international stage for China’s engagement with the global public during the Beijing Olympics. Today, it continues this legacy of large-scale broadcasting, standing as a real-time display of China’s mood.

Unveiled on June 23 of this year, the installation Nature and Man in Rhapsody of Light at the Water Cubeis the product of Jennifer Wen Ma‘s artistic insight, Zheng Jianwei‘s lighting expertise and Guillermo Acevedo‘s programming chops. Together with their team, the three collaborators built a program that aggregates and analyzes millions of emoticons used on micro-blogging site Weibo. Based on the frequency of emoticons, the program constructs a lighting scheme to match the real-time feelings of China’s netizens.

The sequences are built around the main themes of fire, water, wind, earth, and thunder, and the colors move in daily flux.

The drowning deaths of 3 young people in Northeast Ohio recently have lifeguards and aquatics experts sharing advice on how to really recognize a drowning victim.

Most people think they would recognize a person in trouble, but the experts say the reality is much more subtle and different than what’s often portrayed in Hollywood and can happen anywhere.

“It can happen with parents right beside of the child,” said Michelle Rieger, Cleveland State University Aquatics and Safety Coordinator.

sams-diverter(Or as my alternative cheesy title said: “SAMS Elude and Diverter wetsuits make the sharks say “Meh”, the dudes say “Yeah!” :-)

    Read The Guardian and POPSCI

Scientists from the University of Western Australia, with designers Shark Attack Mitigation Systems (SAMS), have unveiled two new wetsuits that they say could save lives in the water.

Based on a breakthrough discovery that sharks are colour-blind, one wetsuit, labelled the “Elude”, is designed to camouflage a swimmer or diver in the sea.

At the other extreme, the “Diverter” sports bold white and dark-blue stripes, and is intended to mirror nature’s warning signs to ward off any potential shark attack.

“The 95th birthday celebration of the global liberation icon and South African elderly statesman, Nelson Mandela, has seen many corners of South Africa and the world erupt in excitement over Madiba’s life.

Even the sporting world has paid tribute to Madiba. Retired Olympic gold medalist-swimmer Lyndon Ferns was accompanied by a multi-racial group of young swimming girls – part of the ‘Get the Girls to Gold’ programme.”
