  • Text Messages Are Saving Swedes From Cardiac Arrest

Sweden has found a faster way to treat people experiencing cardiac emergencies through a text message and a few thousand volunteers.

A program called SMSlivräddare —or SMSLifesaver — solicits people who have been trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). When a Stockholm resident dials 112 for emergency services, a text message is sent to all volunteers within 500 meters of the person in need. The volunteer then arrives at the location within the crucial first minutes to perform lifesaving CPR. The odds for surviving cardiac arrest drop 10% for every minute it takes first responders to arrive.

“The traditional emergency services, especially the ambulance — they have problems in the Stockholm area,” said Dr. Mårten Rosenqvist, a professor of cardiology and spokesman for the group. “First there are not so many, second there is heavy traffic in Stockholm, and third, they are usually occupied by doing other things: transporting patients to the emergency room, or transporting patients between hospitals.”

With ambulance resources stretched thin, the average response time is some eight minutes, allowing SMS-livräddare-volunteers to reach victims before ambulances in 54% of cases.

With the 94th National Sports Festival heading toward the finish line, Olympic swimming star Park Tae-hwan has emerged as the front-runner for the MVP honors.

Park, the gold medalist in the men’s 400-meter freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Summer Games, has snatched up four swimming medals through Tuesday. Competing at the swimming arena bearing his own name in the host city of Incheon, west of Seoul, Park finished first in the men’s 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle, 4×100m relay and 4×200m relay.

He was the anchor in both of the relay events and mounted a huge comeback over the final stretch to give his Incheon team gold medals.

  • Danish broadcaster TV2 to go ‘all in’ on Herning 2013 Europeans

Simma.nu/dk has an interesting notice from Danish broadcaster TV2’s sport host and commentator Michael Stærke, that TV2 will go ‘all in’ on the LEN 2013 European Short Course Championships in Herning in December, broadcasting everything including prelims, finals and pre- and post-session shows. TV2 will be mustering what they see as their strongest team, with journalists, experts and technicians handpicked to have the best people possible around the pool. And because of this, they want to let the Danes know that there is swimming on the schedule, with more focus on swimming this fall, more opportunities to have swimming in the news, and crew also present every day at the upcoming Danish Short Course Champs, 14-17 November 2013. Because of this, he asks the Danish swimming community to contact him with whatever swim stories they find interesting, and for everyone to remember to buy tickets for Herning 2013.

With no water yet in the Herning 2013 venue, the organizers recently jumped the gun and arranged a ‘dryland swimming’ fun event, as seen in the video below. Too bad there are no subtitles, the commentators are awesome, describing her shock when realizing that there are also male competitors in the final, and going over her lousy start but awesome turn in the replay. Jeanette herself says when asked how she ranks this victory, that she is totally speechless, can hardly breathe, that this is her biggest victory ever.
