Read SportNext (in Dutch)‘It sounds unlikely, as water and technology do not mix, and yet there is a ‘Google Glass’ project for the sport of swimming in development, under the name Instabeat. The silicon display is attached to goggles and gives the swimmer feedback on the progress. Gijsbregt Brouwer spoke at the BNR Sportzaken about the potential of Instabeat and Jacco Verhaeren was excited. Opportunities for the athletes and for the fans.’ […]
‘Jacco Verhaeren is enthusiastic: “What I really like about this product is the direct feedback. We work a lot with technology and everything we develop is also about direct feedback.’

Man who jumped into freezing cold sea ‘probably saved by beers’
Oh no, crazy British news that will probably make a lot of us drink beer, ‘just in case’
A man left close to death after leaping from the Herne Bay pier into the sea may have been saved by the eight beers he drank before jumping.
He and a pal stripped to their underwear and plunged into the cold water after a drinking session.
But the foolish pair had to be rescued by emergency crews after struggling for 45 minutes to get ashore. […]
“The paramedics said that it probably kept him alive, because his body had slowed down so much that it might have helped him.

Read BBC
A woman has died after becoming trapped in a sea cave off the Dorset coast.
A coastguard rescue team was called to Tilly Whim Caves in Durlston, near Swanage, on Saturday afternoon, after a man swimming with her raised the alarm.
He was winched to safety but the woman, aged 30, had become trapped in the caves at sea level. By the time rescuers reached her she had died.
The man, 31, was unhurt. Rescuers were unable to retrieve the woman’s body as it was deemed “too dangerous”.

CC photo #672: Me being interviewed by Faroese radio
Me being interviewed by our national radio station, after the last meet of this qualification period for the Nordic Juniors, Nordic Champs and European Champs 2013. Bartal excused himself for not getting a better picture of me. I just had to say it like it is, that this is how I look; fat and constantly slightly baffled. Tomorrow the TV station :-)

City of Key West considers monument to Diana Nyad at Smathers Beach
See keynews.comThe city of Key West is considering placing a monument of world record swim champ Diana Nyad at Smathers Beach. That’s where Nyad landed on Labor Day after crossing 111 miles of ocean from Cuba without a shark cage. It was her fifth and final attempt to accomplish what no one had done before.
While no one at city hall has mentioned going as far as commissioning a statue, City Manager Bob Vitas has “Diana Nyad monument at Smathers Beach” listed as part of his report to the City Commission for its 6 p.m. Wednesday, meeting at Old City Hall, 510 Greene St.
Details weren’t available Friday from Vitas because he will deliver his report first to commissioners, said city spokeswoman Alyson Crean.
But the recommendation from the Art in Public Places board is for the city to announce a $5,000 international competition for a Nyad tribute.
“What shape, I have no idea,” said Michael Shields, the board’s chairman. “That’s up to the artist. It’s for people coming to Key West. I mean, this is Lindbergh in Paris.”

The Orlando-based company, Jeff Ellis and Associates, says Lopez broke a company rule and could have put beachgoers in his section in jeopardy…”
