    Olympic funding for basketball, synchronised swimming, water polo and weightlifting has been withdrawn following UK Sport’s latest review. [… ]

    UK Sport’s review decided to target funding only on those sports where Olympic and Paralympic medals are realistic targets.

    Simon Timson, director of performance at UK Sport, said: “We have undertaken a thorough, evidence-based review of all the funded sports to arrive at these tough yet important decisions. By its very nature elite sport is intensely competitive and the cost of success in the Rio environment means it is vital that every pound we invest has a real benefit in terms of medal performance.”

    British Swimming Chief Executive David Sparkes suggested that a formal appeal against the decision could take place, and said: “We are deeply disappointed and shocked at the decision to remove funding from the sports of women’s water polo and synchronised swimming.

    “While British Swimming welcomes UK Sport’s on-going support for diving and para-swimming, as well as recognising the massive turn around in the direction of the swimming programme, it is an extremely dark day for women’s sport in this country as today’s announcement could well signal the death of these historic Olympic sports in Britain.

    Following the decision of the FINA Doping Panel on June 14, 2013 (see FINA Press Release 47/2013) on the case Mads Glaesner (DEN), the swimmer filed an appeal to the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport). The decision of the CAS, issued on January 31, 2014 stipulates that only the results of the date of testing (December 14, 2012) are forfeited.

    Therefore, the final classification of the two relevant events at the 11th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) Istanbul 2012 is established as follows:

    400m Free (on December 14, 2012):

    • Gold Medal: Paul Biedermann (GER) – 3:39.15
    • Silver Medal: Yun Hao (CHN) – 3:39.48
    • Bronze Medal: Matthew Stanley (NZL) – 3:41.01

    1500m Free (on December 16, 2012):

    • Gold Medal: Mads Glaesner (DEN) – 14:30.01
    • Silver Medal: Gregorio Paltrinieri (ITA) – 14:31.13
    • Bronze Medal: Pal Joensen (FAR) – 14:36.93

    “He is battling with his health issues at the moment and he is having a tough time,” Ken Thorpe said of his 31-year-old son, who earlier was wandering the streets.

    “But hopefully in six months’ time he will be out the other side.”

    Thorpe is now back in rehab where he is being treated for depression.

    A Winter Swimming Competition is being organized on Saturday 8 February, for the third consecutive year in Skellefteå [Northern Sweden]. This is the Swedish Open Championship. Last year we had approximately 120 winter swimmers and this year “The Happy Friends of Dark and Cold” hope to double that figure.
