    Kangasala, Finland, August 9. Yesterday and today, lake Vesijarvi in Finland was venue of the2014 Nordic Open Water Championships, arranged by the Kuohu swim club in Kangasala as part of the annual Finnish championships.

    Sweden’s Ellen Olsson won both the women’s 5 and 10 K events, with a convincing lead especially in the 10 K. Finland’s Annina Ala-Seppala and Laura Lajunen won silver and bronze in the 5 K, while Faroe Island’s Cecilia Eysturdal won silver in the 10 K, and Finland’s Benita Haikola bronze.

    The men’s events were tighter tussles, as Denmark’s Laust Moesgaard touched out Sweden’s Gustav Swedenborg with a 1 second lead in the 5 K, and Swedenborg then won the 10 K only 7 seconds ahead of Denmark’s Magnus Andersen. Andersen won a medal in the 5 K also, taking bronze while Sweden’s Hugo Wiman took the bronze in the 10K.

  • Johnathan Cureton jumped from a bridge into Mountain Island Lake last week, but never resurfaced.

    Alivia Cureton said she knew her brother was adventurous and lived life to the fullest. But she said she had mixed feelings on July 31 when her brother told her he wanted to jump off the bridge to shoot a YouTube video.

    “He was really excited,” Alivia said. “He was so happy. He was like, ‘Yeah, I’m going to do this,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, OK,’ and I was trying to be excited for him but I was like, ‘I don’t know. I’ve never seen anyone jump off a bridge before as something fun to do.’”

    She knew he would do it with or without her so she agreed to take him to the lake and shoot the adventure with her iPhone.

    She said one thing gave her peace.

    “He’s a hell of a swimmer so that’s why I felt OK with it,” Alivia said.

    Today, at the Wellington Winter Championships, Commonwealth Games gold medalist Lauren Boyle was reported to have smashed a world record in the short course 1500-meter freestyle event.

    Boyle, who will be competing at the Pan Pacific Championships later this month, clocked a 15:22.68 in the women’s 1500-meter freestyle.  That effort crushed Mireia Belmonte Garcia’s record of 15:26.95 set last November at the Spanish Short Course Championships.  Boyle also split an 8:08.05 at the 800-meter mark.

    Her record will still require ratification by FINA following a doping test and an official survey of the pool at the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre.

    This is where the controversy enters the equation.
