A Gatineau swim coach has been charged with two counts of voyeurism after police allege he set up a smartphone to film the inside of a women’s locker room.
Gatineau police said in a news release they arrested 48-year-old Gilbert McDonald of Gatineau on Friday after the discovery of a smartphone that was “strategically placed” in order to film the inside of a women’s locker room in the Gabrielle-Roy campus on Cite-des-Jeunes Boulevard.
McDonald coached the CEGEP’s swim team and is the general manager of the Club aquatique de l’Outaouais, according to police.
He was charged with two counts of voyeurism on Wednesday.
Star swimmer Park Tae-hwan submitted to prosecutors a tape recording of conversations he had with the head of the clinic that injected him with testosterone, a banned substance for athletes.
Some media reports say Park is heard to chide the doctor for allegedly failing to inform him that the injections he received contained the banned substance.
The physician said Wednesday he did not know Park had recorded their conversations and that the swimmer “never raised his voice” at him.
“We inform all of our patients who receive our anti-aging program that they are given male hormone therapy and we told Park Tae-hwan as well,” he added.
“In late October or early November of last year, Park Tae-hwan’s sister came to our hospital and asked us about the injections,” he said. “At first she said Park had failed a doping test, then said he didn’t, and then that he seems to have been caught ‘a little bit.’”
A doctor who allegedly injected a banned substance into South Korean swimmer Park Tae-hwan was indicted Friday on charges of professional negligence, prosecutors said.
The move comes after Park, a four-time Olympic medalist and two-time world champ, tested positive for testosterone in a recent World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) test. Park claimed the doctor had given him an injection without fully disclosing that it could contain a banned substance.
Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky broke multiple world swimming records before graduating high school. Now in her senior year in Bethesda, Md., she’s wrapping up her high school swimming career and looking forward to World Championships this summer.
