  • When thieves broke into Benoît Huot’s home in Longueuil last summer, they stole more than just his prized international swimming medals.

The burglary left an open wound on Huot, one of Canada’s most decorated and most popular Paralympic athletes.

“It was tough,” Huot said of the July 26 robbery that claimed seven medals, a television and other sundry items.

    “You ask yourself, why?

“I strongly believe it was just a coincidence. They took other things in the house and they happened to find the medals. They were in boxes. They were not even displayed out to see. They probably didn’t even know what it was.”

The affable Huot has begrudgingly come to terms with the fact he may never see those hard-earned medals ever again — but the next best thing occurred Monday when replacement medals were awarded to Huot in a moving ceremony at École Sécondaire Joseph Charbonneau in east-end Montreal.

  • Two helicopters carrying French sports stars filming a popular European reality show crashed in a remote part of Argentina, killing 10 people, including two Olympic medal winners and a sailing champion, authorities said.

The helicopters apparently collided in midair Monday near Villa Castelli in La Rioja province, about 1,170 kilometres northwest of Buenos Aires, La Rioja Secretary of Security Cesar Angulo told TN television. All 10 people on board — eight French nationals and two Argentine pilots — were killed.

“An explosion occurred and it’s believed that they collided,” said Angulo, referring to the helicopters. Photographs showed the burning and smoking wreckage of the helicopters on the ground in dry scrubland with people gathered nearby.

Among the dead were French Olympic gold medal swimmer Camille Muffat, Olympic boxer Alexis Vastine and sailor Florence Arthaud, according to a statement from La Rioja’s government.

The show’s producers, Adventure Line Productions — or ADL — released a statement confirming the 10 deaths.

“All the ADL teams are devastated and share the deep pain of the families and loved ones they are in contact with,” the statement said. “We are in contact with the production teams on site [and] with the French and Argentine authorities. We will give more information as soon as possible.”

Argentine authorities were at the scene of the crash late Monday trying to determine its cause.

  • The Danish Swimming Federation today announced the results of a nationwide survey, revealing among other things that despite of 91% of adult Danes saying that swimming ability is important or highly important, every third adult and half of kids aged 7-14 cannot complete 200 meters,  which is the Nordic definition of swimming ability.

    – We have known for a long time that a part of the population cannot swim, and now it is also confirmed by a major survey that shows that a lot of Danes – adult as well as children – do not have the necessary swimming skills, says director of the Danish Swimming Federation, Pia Holmen.
