Labor Day is basically a going away party, a fond farewell to summer.  But in Oceanside it is the site of the longest annual rough water swim in the West, the Oceanside Labor Day Pier Swim.

Nearly 500 competitors dove into the Pacific Ocean Monday morning hoping to make the 1.1 mile swim around the Oceanside Pier.  But rough waters were a game changer.  Elevated surf and strong rip currents forced more than 300 participants back to shore.

Summer may be officially over, but the risk of drowning doesn’t end with it. In fact, it happens at such a high rate that, according to the National Safety Council, 7,000 people die from drowning each year. And here’s another statistic from the NSC that should give parents pause: it is the leading cause of death for children under 5.

Excerpt from a memo sent out by FINA this morning, see also FINA clarifies: Ryan Lochte used illegal dolphin kicks in Kazan:

    SW 9 MEDLEY SWIMMING

SW 9.1 In individual medley events, the swimmer covers the four swimming strokes in the following order: Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle. Each of the strokes must cover one quarter (1/4) of the distance.

    Interpretation:
According to SW 9.1 each of the strokes must cover one quarter (1/4) of the distance. Being on the back when leaving the wall for the Freestyle portion of the Ind. Medley is covering more than one quarter of the distance in the style of Backstroke and is, therefore, a disqualification. Backstroke swimming is only defined as being on the back.

Shaolin monk Shi Liliang knows that persistence is key when attempting a difficult task. Especially if that difficult task happens to be running on water.

Shi has been training to run on water for ten years, using nothing but thin, floating boards for support.

On Thursday, he accomplished his record of running 125 meters across water, in his town of Quanzhou.

“It’s not for the faint-hearted,” Middleton told news agency Reuters (via the Toronto Sun), describing the hardcore race as “almost three Ironman swims and one and a half marathons.”

Princess Kate‘s younger sister, who turns 32 on Sunday, was not only inspired by the fitness element of the race but also by the beautiful scenery along the way.

“I was taken by the idea of competing in the stunning surroundings. Otillo has an edge to it that stands out above other endurance races,” she said. (Middleton will also be raising money for the Michael Matthew Foundation during the event.)

  • Organizers cancel world-famous Waikiki Roughwater Swim due to rough water

High-surf and rough conditions forced organizers to cancel the annual Waikiki Roughwater Swim in Waikiki Saturday, less than an hour before it was to start.

The event draws swimmers from Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Japan, including a few Olympic medalists and world champions.

Event organizers had been keeping a close eye on the weather all week and had to make the tough call.

“So, we feel horrible having people come all this way and have to not have the race, but it would’ve been very unsafe too to do today,” said event director Kaia Hedlund.
